Erik- why you should be completely fine is your windmill in the ground? If so you don't even need to protect it. My 10 gal is in a pot it has close to 2 foot of trunk and is perfectly fine at -10c for a few weeks.

Erik-I usually leave my 10gal windmill out untill the temps are close to -12c with no issue.

Bill - the new pot I put it in is about 4 inches deeper and about an inch wider what do you think bill?

Ok thanks. I left my little windmill 10 gal out side until Jan 8 of last year temps were around -10 or colder some nights, it didn't even flinch the leaves where still green the entire pot was a solid brick of ice! Once I plant my big one next spring I'll try and push it to mid Jan without ...

You know what Barb Im going to go this weekend and look for a wider pot, it will only be in that pot for the winter but I still think its a good idea to put it into a larger pot.

Thanks for the comment Barb, I too only get around 5 or so new fronds each year but I'm hopeing that will change next spring when I plant it. Maybe mine will grow faster when it's cooler out, by the way Barb have you noticed a difference in your trachy once you planted it?

Damn Scott I love big trachy you have by the deck. I would love to plant mine in the ground, I believe I'm a zone 5b could be wrong though, I'll take a look at your protection method this year and take some notes.

On average when do trachys usually flower (trunk height)

My windmill has one foot 5 inches of trunk with leaves it's close to 5 foot, I was wondering at what height should I expect to see some flowering?

Good info, I'm actually on a well system my water tests out perfect. I'm cutting back on the fertilizer and water. I'll see how it goes. The holes I drilled seem to be spitting out water like crazy!

Matter of fact yes it does get worse with the more I water. I will cut back on the fertilizer, thank you all for the help.

Ps I drilled close to ten new drainage holes in the pot.

Thanks for the comments on my trachy, I guess it's in food shape other than the drainage issue wich I have just fixed ( hopefully). I try and keep it well fertilized with palm food along with other micro elements.

Ok so here are some pictures, I'm on a well system my water tests out perfect. I think its my lack of drainage in my pot. Year after year I keep getting these huge black tips on my Trachy, I fertilized in spring with palm food and water once a week maybe more. The only thing I can think of is when I water it's to much at once or to much fertilizer. It's about 4 foot tall and is in a very large pot it has proper dranage ...

Im really hopeing for some flowering on my windmill, Barrie thats good news mine has about 3 foot of trunk also. I find it fasinating that they will all flower at different times maybe fertilizer or the amount of sun they get might speed up the procces. Who knows...

Anyone had any luck growing a 4 foot tall windmill in there house over the winter months? I put my 4 footer (3foot of trunk) in the sun room last winter temps got close to -8C. I think I might have over watered it while it was in the sun room and the spear pulled, funny thing is it's perfectly fine ...

Oh one other question. I noticed that the tips down to about a finger nail is black, would this be caused from to much watering?

When should I expect to see flowering from my Trachycarpus?

When should my windmill palm start to flower? It has close to 3 foot of trunk and a crown close to 2 foot.

It's in a very large pot and gets plenty of water and palm fertilizer.
