I have a sun room that is attached to my house that has windows on all 3 sides and maintanes a tempature close to 30C in summer with humidity levels around 60%. I had my windmill palm in the sun room untill June 5 of this year and at the time It was pushing out 3 massive fronds all at once and seemed to be growing very fast! I decided to move it litterly 3 feet from the original sun room spot to the patio I made sure to keep the position of the pot the same as it was in the sun room, it now gets slightly more sun then it did in the sun room.
The reason for this post is that it seems like it has cut down on its growing by about 50% or more! Is it to do with the fact that the sun room has a consistant tempature? Or is it because it was spring and the palm was growing at a faster rate? Im debating wether to move it back into the sun room or just leave it outside.
My summer so far has been one of the hottest on recored with day time highs in the mid to high 30's with humidity levels near 100%. Feeling like 40c.
Ill post a picture of my palm you can see the sun room in the picture it will give you a better idea is to how far i moved it.
Don't sweat it one bit! Leave it outside as long as you can and you'll be better off. Right now it's trying to grow roots in the ginormous pot it's in.
Next season if it goes in the ground you'll see better growth, in pots they just grow ok. Ask Barb she had one in a pot for 33 years or so, now that it's in the ground it's growing like gang busters!
We miss you Barb and hopefully everything is OK!!!
Hey! Yeah he contacted me back via email, I'm still waiting on some pictures of windmills that have 3-4 foot of trunk. Hopefully I'll see some pictures tommorow ( Sunday).
Scott what do you think leave it outside? I plan on planting it into the ground next spring once I move into my new house. Hopefully I'll see some improved growth.
Yeah go with what Bill said. He has lots of experience! Has taught me a lot a long with the other vets on this site. Last year when I had trachys in pots they stayed outside till Dec. I brought them in a few times when the temp went more than a few degrees below zero. I have never done well with trachys in the house. Almost lost one last year. Mike in Montreal keeps some indoors during the winter so ask him how he does it. I usually over water or under water or they get mites...
The one I got from Mike too was a 4 foot clear trunk. It looks great and has done quite well so far. Mike's a good guy so you should have no problems dealing with him..
hey windmillpalm guy,
My trachy hates the hot dry desert winds in our area, so its permanent planted spot is on the east side of my house.
I'm convinced mine would never have made it through a summer in your hot sunroom conditions, probably because mine was in a pot for so long (yup 32 yrs).
Roots heat up in a pot, and mine never did well for that reason.
Despite the 10 or 12 fronds that some very experienced people here get on their palms each year, I expect no more than 3 to 5 fronds annually.
Mine looks better on cooler sunny days than mid-summer blistering heat, but perhaps it's because of our very low humidity.
Thanks for the comment Barb, I too only get around 5 or so new fronds each year but I'm hopeing that will change next spring when I plant it. Maybe mine will grow faster when it's cooler out, by the way Barb have you noticed a difference in your trachy once you planted it?
yes I sure have noticed a HUGE change in its growth habit.
Will be very evident in the pic tomorrow (too hectic today sorry)
Everyone here had told me that my old Trachy will explode with growth once its roots weren't confined going round and round in a pot.
And everyone was right.
Plus, a very good (palm specific) fertilizer helps immensely.
But I repeat the eastern exposure has done wonders, pot or no pot.
No wind on the east side, so no torn leaves.
I'm convinced trachies are the only palms that like cooler weather.
Barb
It'll be fun to watch you add four feet to yours this year ('coz your palm has grown so much)
Darn Flickr photo hosting site...had a pro account for several years; they've just changed a bunch of stuff on the site.
My new photos won't load
(where is my potato gun???!!!!)
Hey thanks for the tip Scott, ill check out barbs protection method im assuming its in the green house and outside protection section?? Scott I just ordered a 6 foot windmill off of Mike with a massive 3 foot of thick trunk, i'll be posting some pictures of it should get it this week he said.
Oh yeah Mike said the best protection method is to use straw for the base and to build a wooden box and insulate the inside of it useing a ridged foam and to use a couple 100w light bulbs, he said to make sure its close to air tight as possible and to wrap the fronds but not to cover them. He also gave me some ingredients for this super fertilizer, one of the ingredients is BEER! Love it!!
Haha.. I'm surprised he gave you the secret ingredient! That's the way he overwinters palms. I use a different method like Barb that really doesn't damage the palm or stress it in the winter. My palms look the same when they come out as when they went in. Mikes's look good too but get damage over the winter and may take a bit longer to grow in the spring. They see much lowe temps than mine do. Are you planting it when you get it then??
