Hey Aaron,

the only 'upright' cactus I see to the left is this cactus......but it's not an upright. It's a miniature form of O. humifusa. It has tiny pads. Cool little plant. Is this the cactus? It will lay flat in winter.

Hi Aaron, I'm not sure what the ID is. I posted photos of it several times over the years and I have a list of confirmed ID's! LOL It's a shy bloomer but It does bloom.....it probably took 4 or 5 years to bloom for me. I'm sure a cactus expert could ID it with a photo of the flower. I can trade a pa...

Hi Jack,

that 20 foot'er in Georgetown must be a great sight. It would be nice to know if that 20' specimen has any brown branches since once it's brown, the areas will never turn green again..........one can tell if there has been a historic freeze in the area!

Hi Paul, that first 'humifusa' photo you posted with spines sure looks like it has some polyacantha genes in it?? Some of these cactus are hard to ID. Some Macrorhizas seem to look like humifusa too. Duncan, your spineless cactus is a beauty......I can't get any of those types to survive here in Mas...

Hi Igor,

those protection methods should work, thanks.

Serj,

the monkey puzzle tree in my garden was seed germinated by in 2000. It's 10-years old now.......very slow growers.

Hi Jack,

thanks for the input with mulching the monkey puzzles. I have another monkey puzzle I grew from seed but it's in a container. I'll plant it out next season.....this container grown one appears more 'healthy' than the one outside. Perhaps these trees will get hardier with size/age??

Hi Serj,

Very nice A. araucana!! I wish someday mine will look that healthy! I've heard there is a form of A. araucana which is more hardy. I beleive this 'hardy' form is native to the colder regions in South America.

yes your colder than me if your USDA zone 6a. I'm in USDA zone 6b. By the way, palms can't grow here, I protect them in a greenhouse too!

Hi Jack, what type of trunk damage did you get on your monkey puzzle when mulched heavily? How much mulch did you use? Hi Barb, Yucccs don't get much protection. I try to protect my Yucca rostratas from moisture not cold. I place a small 'roof' over the leaves to keep cold rain/snow out of the leave...

Nice protection Serj!! Have you tried Araucaria araucana? This species looks similar but is the hardiest of all the Araucaria species. I also beleive your colder than my climate and my Araucaria araucana browns out on me every winter but keeps on living. I now protect it in a greenhouse during winte...

Don't know of a good source but they do propagate very easy. Just cut off a stem and stick it into water and it will send out roots in a month. Aucubas don't like winter sun or they will burn. I had to move mine to the north side of my house and it does GREAT with no burn. It sounds crazy since the ...
