Hey barb! It had to come sometime, right?

We're still awating our first snow of the year... We had a snow free (including flurries) November, for the first time ever in Toronto weather history!

We're supposed to drop down in temperature this week, which should finish off the Geraniums, Roses, etc. that are still blooming strong. I should try to grab some shots before it's too late... Hopefully, we get our first snow this week, because if we get any more cold rain I'm going to LOSE it!

No, it didn't.

Just my old (cold) bones complaining.

What is this with BC getting nailed every December with Siberian outflows.
Wish the Russians would keep their bloody cold.

If I remember correctly, Torontonians were still golfing last year when we were at -10 and snow.
The eastern seaboard sure benefits from that gulf stream, more and more each year it seems.

Then the REAL cold hit us December -24C.

You've still got geraniums and roses in bloom? (#@$&*#@ !) <---you can imagine what THAT said!

Our weather here is kind of a shock but back to normal fro this time of year.
After Oct-Nov go by with nothing below 30(F) we are struggling to get up there now.
19(F) last night coldest night so far-They are talking 6(F) next Wednesday and possibly a major snow,a little early to call but looking that way.
I am hoping these cold spells will be brief this winter compared to the last 2
Hey,if it has to get cold lets get it out of the way in winter and leave spring out of it!
Some of my Trachys and Sabals are still uncovered

Lets see how they handle a few days blow freezing-they are supposed to be cold hardy!

We are on our 4th snow fall, but is all but melted. Temps have been cold at night 9f.

I think every place I have in the southwest has had snow already

. My place in Texas has already been down to 21 with only a high of 31 today. And yes robustas do grow there

I'm sure they will be burnt this winter, but will pull through.

Man snow and cold, I'm not sure if I'm ready. We've been really spoiled this fall, I guess it's for all the crap weather in May and June.

No snow here yet. The cold is coming Tue Wed next week -14c 6f for lows and highs of -8c 15f. The cold and snow is in Alberta and Saskatchewan as well -27c -16f for lows and almost a foot of snow. Yikes. It`s good that we get a warm up after this cold spell.

Island news here tonight showed snow in Houston TX. That Alberta clipper is penetrating deep down to the Gulf States regions. 7°C (45°F) here today, but the NNW winds provide evidence of things to come. Deep freeze forecast for early next week during overnight hours. They're saying -7°C (20°F) during that point for overnight lows.

High made it to +10C but our low did get to -.2C with a light frost.
Barrie what is your lowest low so far this fall?

Well, I spoke too soon. We got blasted last night. The remaining 'tropicals' are now looking 'weepy'... The Ricinus on my street that got blasted last frost, really got it this time and probably won't make another rebound! I'll take a look this afternoon to see if I can't get some shots of the 'half-hardy' flowers that are still going strong!

We might get our first sign of snow here tonight. Probably sleet though, will see. I might get some snow palm pictures, washies are covered in tarps again, that was a nice way to start the day, covering them in the drizzle. At least there safe!

I was reading the weatherunderground(forecasters discussion)for s.e. Iowa four Tuesday/Wednesday of next week-this is some of what THEY are saying NOW

Tuesday and Wednesday...a moderate to high end winter storm will move
into area lasting until late Wednesday. Have high end likely probability of precipitation with
most to all of forecast area to receive moderate to heavy snow
amounts of 4 to locally 8 plus inches suggested.
Tuesday morning lows. Local heavy quantitative precipitation forecast and forcing tools continue to
suggest a foot or more of snow remains possible with this system.
Will hit winter storm harder in hazardous weather outlook of a higher
end event of snow and wind to hit all or most of forecast area
Tuesday and Wednesday. Trends continue to support should have high
impact locations and any risk of thunder-snow confirmed next 12-24
hours. Wednesday night...lows with snow cover have lowered with
indications from crashing bl temperatures later shifts will need to reduce
at least a few more degrees.
Thursday and Friday...no changes made...all indications temperatures
need lowering at least an additional 5 plus degrees with mins below
zero possible and highs in teens to lower 20s. ..Nichols..

Sounds nice doesn't it?

Yikes Jim, I hope there wrong below zero for now seems really early! I'm watching the weather very closely here. I hope my wall-o-waters come today so I can be ready just in case. The Washies are all tied up at least which was a pain trust me. I didn't cut any fronds off after our conversation the other day. All the lights are on them too, I planned on finishing them today but the weathers to wet out. I'll do it tomorrow when it dries out some.

we'll get hit by the same storm coming your way. Hopefully not quite as cold--it was "only" 19 oF here this morning.
I finished my winter protection last week. I'll post photos on a new thread and ask for suggestion I can implement before it gets really cold.

Its looking unlikely there'll be snow over the 'pond' until January here at least. Some parts have seen snow in the UK already but only the higher parts (I know I know it's a flat country

)

Ive seen one frost so far with a temperature of -1.8C (approx 30F?)

Usually we do see frost in November but none this year, I guess thats El Nino at work.

Possibility of either a severe cold easterly next weekend, or a very warm southerly - impossible to tell!

Christmas cactus is flowering outside though, it seems to appreciate the lack of light (which is quite depressing at 58 degrees north)

After reading these posts, sounds like Stephen at 58 degrees Latitude has the "warmest" weather, with a Christmas Cactus still blooming outside. Go figure!

I bet Stephen has never heard of "thunder-snow"

And Wes at 49 Latitude still has flowers in bloom!

Bill, palm books recommend leaving older fronds on way past being yellow, even til they're brown. Dying palm fronds apparently continue to return nutrients into the plant.

Since you fertilize generously in the summer, your palms aren't going to be nutrient deficient.
But I'd wait til spring to cut fronds. And for palms the size of yours, tying them must be a two-person job.

Believe it or not I've seen thundersnow once, in 1995/1996 - it's the most amazing thing and I'd love to see it again, unfortunately I havent seen another one for 13 years and unlikely to see one in my lifetime.. bad hey?

Come to Toronto, we usually have a few 'snow-thunder' events a winter. I'd never seen/heard of it until I moved here, but since then I've experienced it every winter... It just seems wrong!

Mine is -1.7C

Very comparable Wes. I can't say for exact ceratin but -2°C is very likley the case on Dec 3 (am). No frost since.
All forecasts are calling for colder temps which vary for lows of -5°C to -7°C on the worst occasions.
EC is saying (at this point) possible wet snow showers by the time the weather shifts more towards normal.

I woke up this morning to around 10 cm of snow!

but they are saying thursday is supposed to be 10 degrees and rainy, so hopefully that will wash it away!

Actually Kazakhstan is a very Asian country! 7 hours flying westward to the Netherland (Atlantic region, ) 6 hours to the Pacific region (Seuol, Korea) and 7 hours to Bangkok... We are quite distant either form the oceans or the civilisation.

There was snow here about an hour out of town 2 days ago. There was repots of snow in southern ontario as well as northern ontario and the eastern townships of quebec.

As for my city, no snow at all yet. The last 5 years weve barley had any, or it doesnt fall till after january. Last year we had 60cm, out of our regulat 150-300cm.

I would say it's average date of the first snow. Last year it's happened two weeks earlier. Frost free season is about 185 days in Almaty.

We just missed our first snow last night. It snowed ~100km north of the city in Barrie last night. We did, however, have our first frost! There was a nice coating on the windshields as I was running to work this am!

Ouchy!

We have gone from seeing dewpoints the highest I have ever seen last summer(high as 86!)to
some of the driest air I can recall seeing,right now(2:57 p.m.) it is 75(F) at my house,the dewpoint is 32(F)-
that works out to 12%

Yesterday it was 71(F) with 19(F) dewpoint,that works out to 7% relative humidity-
pretty much unheard of here.

Quite a turn around

Glad to be back.
I have spent the last year totally renovating my house including the yard.
My yard is full of trachies now.
I found a nursery in South Delta that was selling trachies for $29.99 each with about 18 to 24" trunks and nice large fronds that made the palm about 4 - 5 ' tall.
I loaded up my Jeep Commander twice full of them.
It was a great deal.
I am off to the big island of Hawaii but when I get back I will post pics.

They are part of the Nurseryland chain.
In the spring I will take a drive out there again and let everyone know.

There was the same amount of snow in Almaty 20 days ago. Since that time my Arundos, Gunnera, Fuchia magelanica are OK. Nothing to say about palms, they are indoor now. All yuccas are fine so far.
