Re: Anyone growing cold hardy palms etc?

Here is a post I put up on a new (to me) FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1525942364400336/permalink/3340884329572788/ The first couple of photos might look familiar from a decade ago on this forum. The last two are my protection of my coconut tree in anticioation of near freezing weather ...

Re: Anyone growing cold hardy palms etc?

I haven't posted in a long time. My Oklahoma cold-hardy palm, I drove to Oregon with a decade ago, and added some new ones at 45oN. No protection at all. Doing well, esp. the Trachy "waggies." I haven't been since August 2021 so rely on my brother for pictures. My SW Florida collection is growing ...

Florida!

Sorry for the years of not posting. A few years ago I retired from my job in Oklahoma and we moved to Florida. I drove (!) my cold-hardy palms to Oregon, where my mother has a cabin on a south-facing slope near the Pacific. They are doing great, especially the waggies. The shaving brush palm had a ...

Update, from Florida

I started this account a few years ago when W and I had a farm in Oklahoma. Life has changed. I moved most of our palms to my parents' place on the northern Oregon coast, which at above 45 oN qualifies as northern palms. They are doing great. I hoped to move there, but W moved to Florida. And, I ...

Short term, Orlando. That is where W moved last year. Longer-term, I like the Gulf Coast. Far enough south where Cocos grow. :-)

If you move on, please stay in touch. Facebook works for me on some others here. I'm moving to Florida in 2017 so may get active on the SE palms forum. As for unprotected, I've been doing that for my zone 9 palm garden at 45 oN latitude, in Oregon. Several low 20s so far this month. All should make ...

Looking good. I expect to see winter protection photos from you soon.

I am in my Manzanita, Oregon, garden (45 oN) now and all good. Lowest so far has been about 40 oF ! I don't plan on any winter protection, not even extra mulch. :D

Brugmansia is a fall blooming plant for me in Oklahoma (but don't have one now).

As for Sabal palms, yikes! Do protect!

Looking great. I love Fall flowers. Glad you have some.

I haven't checked your forecast. In Oklahoma, I'd be getting protection ready. In Oregon, I don't do any. A tornado passed a mile by last week but merely shredded the Musa. Palms fine.

I assume you are gearing up. --Erik

Trachy are solid in Oklahoma most winters, but need (IMHO) heat tape & wrap every few years, most notably 2011.

Hurricanes & palms

I'm on my favorite little Caribbean island right now. They got hit hard by hurricane Earl even though the eye passed south of them. The whole village sounds of hammers as people rebuild. Of relevance to us is how well palms fared, vs other trees. Coconuts in particular but I have yet to see a single ...

Back in Florida. Last week, W and I brought down her horse and cat. Not an easy drive, as with the horse one must go non-stop. Motel 6 may be pet-friendly but even they don't let you bring a stallion into your room overnight. So, about 26 hours on the road. Brief breaks for diesel, soda and to pee ...

Oregon palms at 45oN

Sorry to be offline for so long. I didn't have much to report. In May, I loaded the back of my car and drove from Oklahoma to Oregon. I planted a bunch of additional palms from my potted palm collection in the garden at my parent's coastal cottage. I'll share some cell phone pics when I get them on ...

80s oF in Manzanita!

28 oC. I happen to be in Oklahoma right now where it is rainy and in the 60s oF; potted palms doing great. But, my in-ground palms out in Oregon must be popping after a frostless winter, heavy rains, and fertilizer. :-)

Back from Florida. It was a great trip. Lots of palms everywhere in Central Florida, less so in northern Florida. W is talking about moving to the Orlando area. Florida road trip

I have not been on here much. My in ground palms in Oregon are doing great, El Nino kept them warm and watered all winter. No freeze at 46o N! Potted palms in Oklahoma are outside and pushing spears. The past week, W and I have been in Florida, on a road trip in the little convertible. So good to ...
