I live a bit north of you by Chicago in zone 5b. I don't think you will need to add any addition heat. I just put up a pop up min greenhouse over it, add some mulch (on the inside and around outside rim), then put in a few milk gallons filled with water. If it is planted in an area that gets some ...

Mike,
Mine is only a few feet tall but and still green as ever but the frost is coming very soon. I think my next week its leaves should brown out. How do you protect yours in the winter? Do you cut trunk to only a foot or so tall before covering? How deep do you lay the much, leaves , or hey on it?

It's very nice. It looks like the specimen you have was from a warmer climate. I ready that the ones that come from a climate that gets a lot of frost or cold tend to have many heads. It said those tall single headed ones are from warmer areas. Isn't the other form (shorter leaved form) supposed to ...

I have to agree with that last post and I do have some experience with that. I live in a very solid zone 5. I planted a small rostrata from plant delight. It was planted in a very good microclimate up against south side of my house protected by an overhang. What happened was it stayed a permanent ...

First off, welcome to the board. I'm sorta new here too. I'm a short 4 hour drive from you in Chicago. I have a needle palm that has overwintered outside the past two winters in my climate. I just have one of those popup greenhouses and gave it about 3 inches of woodchip mulch. The whole thing takes ...

That would be really cool to start with a whole field of western yuccas and see if maybe a few could live, then use those for propagation. Or maybe hybridize a filamentosa with the j tree (or a few western species) and grow a field of those hybrids. Then , you could back cross the western species ...

I just order this on eBay. It's listed as a blue yucca. I was thinking it is really a gloriosa. The person selling it lives in NC and it looks to have a small trunk. Obviously the hardiness rating would be off (listed as zones 3-8). What do you think? http://www.ebay.com/itm/170886543907?ssPageName ...

This was a great question. I was curios about this too. He said he saves the pollen in an airtight container in his freezer. Tim, how long have you kept pollen and used it later before it went bad? Do you freeze it too? Would if be helpful to put a small piece of nylon tied off around pollinated ...

I'm not sure if it has been 4 weeks (I think just about that long). My boyfriend was waiting in the car because there wasnt really any good places to park so I don't have a good size comparison pic but here is the mother plant toppled over. In the bottom right corner you can see how small the purple ...

Green seed pods
I just got back from Michigan today. There is a huge Yucca filamentosa that I always look forward to seeing. It's growing in a public area and really stands out just because it's shear size. It looks about the size of Tim's filamentosa x elata hybrid but without the little trunk. This time when I ...

Tim, Your yard is amazing. I knew you had a huge collection but didn't realize just how big it is. You have so many gloriosa. You mentioned they have all different degrees of hardiness. How would you rate the variegated (the one form I have lol) compared to most other (green) forms in hardiness? Is ...

I thought those two are very sensitive to moisture in the winter. Wouldn't rot be at the roots? That's why I was thinking if I could have a thin layer of gravel before the grafted part starts, the cactus would be much more moisture tolerant. If I use a pad species of Opuntia and lay pad flat on soil ...

But with the fragilis as rootstock and not growing anywhere near as large, wouldnt that hinder the growth potential of the the graft? I was thinking it might not be able to either grow enough roots to support the larger cactus or it might even tip over after a few years. Will the Opuntia leaf live ...

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome :D When I planted my elata between 8 and 10 years ago, it was a 5 gal size. It has survived just fine (although it's not to vigorous probably due to much shade). That one was from a Arizona nursery that I don't think is in business anymore. Last year I planted a ...

Grafting for hardiness
Hi, Has anyone had experience with grafting Sclerocactus or Pediocactus onto O fragilis 'potato'? I'm interested in being able to have Sclero and Pedi that don't need rain/snow protection in winter. Since the fragilis is so much smaller, is it able to grow a large enough root system to support the ...

Wow, those are beauties. Since elata have the deep taproot, they don't transplant well. Has anyone had any success with moving a mature specimen like one of those elatas?

Hardiest "true" Yucca tree
Im new to this forum but have always loved the desert and have quite a large cactus/yucca collection. I live in a very solid zone 5 ( right on rim of 5a and 5b). I'm just outside of Chicago but sufficiently inland to not get much lake effect microclimate. My desert garden is along the south side of ...

The pups
Would you be willing to sell or trade for one of those pups. I got a variegated yucca gloriosa that is almost fully hardy in my zone 5 Illinois ( lived for 9 years and grew a 1 foot trunk then a few years ago top got winter kill). I got about 5 small ones from that. Or, if you name a price, I might ...
