Love the Hibiscus. It comes back every year and I have people think the same thing. Didn't realize that the crotons do not do well outside until I read it somewhere. They may do alright in my yard since my irrigation runs at least twice a day and it is extremely humid here in Belmont NC this time of ...

Home Depot had their small trachy's marked down from $29.95 to $19.95. However; four of mine were $89 and two were $59 and not on sale. I got lucky though because just before I checked out of the garden center, a new cashier stepped in and asked what kind of palms those were, and then when I told ...

After a devastating loss of one of my 12 ft Sabal Palmettos, I thought I'd help with my palm checks and balances by adding six more Trachy's..... Here's what they look like just before they're given their new home... http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac291/Homespectors/WillieAnneNeal-Invoice004.jpg ...

Out with the old, in with the new....
Lost one Sabal Palmetto and opted for a rock in its place. I'll be adding more palms but not in this exact location. I like the Rock in with the other palms. To the right of the Rock there is one pindo, a windmill, and a needle palm. Behind the rock there are two huge Sabal Palmettos and two large ...

Sabal Palmettos....
Of the three twelve footers I've planted, one seems to be struggling. I thought it may have been due to poor drainage, but I read somewhere that sabal palmettos thrive in poorly draining soil? Any suggestions on trying to save it? I've hit it with chelated palm ferilizer for palm frizzle (according ...

Red abyssinians look terrible!!!
Brought two back from Riverbanks zoo in Columbia SC about three weeks ago and they seem to be declining more and more. They're in full sun and get plenty of water. See pics in my palm thread. Any suggestions on what is wrong?

Thanks Bill. I've studied your winterproofing picks and will take heed next year after almost losing my Washys... They held up as well as could be expected for temps in the low single digits and little protection. The rootballs on mine weighed several hundred pounds but seemed to shrink once I got ...

Yes. Crepe Myrtle is a Natchez. First year I've seen it bloom before Mid July. They started blooming by the end of may this year. There are a couple palms around town. I've seen a couple Sabal Palmettos and a couple small windmills, but not much else. I haven't seen any washingtonias in my county ...

Here we go..... The two big Washingtonias came back from death. A couple of the European fan palms came back nicely as well. The Crepe Myrtles are pictured below and are proof positive pruning/butchering Crepe Myrtles is NOT necessary. Note in the last picture one of my two Red Abysians looks rough ...

Until I post pictures of the palms that recovered (washingtonias, Pindo, European fans) and post the new picks of the dozen new palms I've added including 12 ft sabal palmettos and some very big windmill plams..... Hope everyone is well and you're having a great growing season. First time I ever ...

Washy Question.....
I brought two 2 1/2 feet washy's in last November in their pots because of winter. They got burnt a little but were recovering nicely in my sunroom until the end of march when temps got up outside. They suddenly died inside where they had been doing great all winter. Is it possible that the longer ...

Great news. Washingtonias are still alive. I lost two of the Pindos but the one in the pic above still looks good. I also lost one European Palm and had some damage to another. Pics to come. I'm excited because I just planted 3 additional Sabal Palmettos last weekend that are about 12 feet tall each ...

Thank God I brought in the two smaller potted washys. The Cannas are now coming up that were planted in the pots with the washys. I think our sun room makes a perfect greenhouse with all the windows and afternoon sun. Needle palm- no protection and no damage http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v660 ...

Damage is done....
Plastic and a drop light weren't enough for my big Washys. I hope the fronds are just gone and not the entire trees. Queen palms are thoroughly burned too, but at least one (the big one) looks like it survived. All three pindos seemed to have survived but two of them have frond damage. The Sabal ...

This weather is more typical of Zone 5. My zip code is 28012 which puts me barely in zone 8 according to Arbor Day and Zone 7B according to all others. It has been down to 14 degrees here for three nights in a row. I've never grown any syagrus palms. My palms are windmills and European Palms which ...

You were right Laaz. The unprotected Queens are turning white on the ends followed by brown then green closer to the trunk. Seem to be surviving but with pretty significant damage to the fronds. Barb and others, I really don't understand the importance of adding sheets under the plastic. My little ...
