Yucca filata #1 removed from garden

Post by TimMAz6 » Sun Oct 21, 2012 3:15 pm

I removed my Yucca filata #1 today since it hasn't bloomed since 2006, it gets brown spots on the leaves, and it just isn't that nice of a Yucca. Here is a photo of it back in 2006.

Here's a photo showing the Yucca filata #1 prior to removing it:

The root was so deep and hard to remove I broke a shovel:

I replaced the filata with a Yucca faxoniana/carnerosana:

Here's the dug up Yucca filata #1.........notice the elata type root........vertical roots only.

Here's a close-up photo of the vertical roots of Yucca filata #1:

Great photos of what must have been a back-breaking job.

But you're gonna plant that somewhere else, right?
Tell me you're not going to throw it out...

Yes the main roots were damaged, but I've seen pics of big yuccas with scarcely a root make it in a new location.
And it might not have spots in a different location...

Tim- This is something that I've had to do as well. And it still gets to me! When a Yucca (or other plant) just isn't up to snuff you really do need to get it out. I sent to Adam both a gloriosa (Tennessee seed, nice plants but I had too many) and a recurvfolia (not worthwhile in zone 5). It hurt to dig them out, but the room is precious, and I can grow something more interesting/better suited to my climate.

Too bad that sucker wasn't trunking...

Tim that had some monster roots!
Paul those arrived today. Thank you. I was elated to see the contents of the box! The Yucca gloriosa and Yucca recurvifolia were welcome additions that went in our garden right away.
Tim, if your Yuccas are not going elsewhere in your yard, surely one of us are going to be able to help take that off of your hands!

Thats too bad Tim, that looked like it was supposed to be a gorgeous plant (not saying it isnt, the colour is pretty nice). Some massive roots as well.

I have a similar situation with my Y filamentosa. I planted it when the garden bed was smaller. It was at the front, now its in the middle and it gets swallowed by plants by july. I will say im more then surprised that it survives, it just doesnt grow as well as i would like (just not enough sun). Do you know how big the roots would be on a small filamentosa?

this Y. filata got too many brown/fungus spots on the leaves and looked poor in spring. It was a 'high maintenance' plant which didn't bloom much and didn't grow a fast trunk. I have other filatas which don't get the brown spots on the leaves............they win the test in my climate. I need more room for new plants.

The filata I dug up may do well in dryer climates since the brown spotting will likely be a 'non issue'. Filatas #4, #5 and #6 perform the best of the test plot. #5 is a beauty year round, is low maintenance, had a great looking bloom, trunks! and is not forming any off shoots yet. I still have seed from #5 if anyone want's it PM me.

Yucca filata #5:
