Yucca Elata in Oriville WA

I just came back from vacation and stopped by the huge y. elata in Oriville WA. so i thought i would take a few pics. Here they are:

Would this Yucca look better if the old fronds were removed?

That is one tall Yucca. How would they stand up to a warm wet winter, here in zone 8b?

How old do you think it is?

With all of your travelling, do you make it to North Van?

If so let me know and I can show you the garden here.

It might not be as old as it looks? I don't now how much rainfall they get in Oriville WA? , because a little extra water speeds up growth a lot. I think because of its size it must be atleast 40 years? Just a geuss. The smaller ones are probley seedlings or suckers from the big one.
I think under the right conditions a guy could grow one 4' tall in 10 years from seed, or maybe taller

They can be removed

, but this one is usually left with the surt on. Y. eleta never looks right to me with all the old leaves removed.

I would love to see your garden some time but i think my travelling days are done for awhile now. My wife and i are expecting our second child in September.

We also just sold our house the other day so now i have to dig some plants up.

The good thing is that we are buying a bigger place so i will have more room for plants.

Maybe in a year or two we will make it out to the lower mainland again and i can see your garden.

How many palms do you have growing at your place now? I think y. elata would do well in your climate but i don't think they do well in really wet conditions. I believe there is one that is a fair size growing in Richmond?

Good guess Aaron.

I found out that the y. elata in Oriville was grow from seed and was planted in 1962. I'm not exactly sure how much rain falls there but i believe it would be around the same as Osoyoos wich receives around 10 - 12 inches per year.

Congrats on the new place and your expecting of your 2nd child.
I have one female t, fortunei that is 16 - 17' tall, another that is a male at 8' tall, and another that has not flowered yet and it is 4' tall. I have a multi trunked chamaerops humilis that is quite large, a 5 gallon brahea armata, 5 gallon trachycarpus takil, 3 chamaedora microspadix but they are small, a 5 gallon trachycarpus latisectus, numerous species of small seedlings such as jubaea chilensis, sabal minor, sabal palmetto, butia capitata and butia eriospatha, trachycarpus wagnerianus, adonida merrelli, trachycarpus manipur and numerous t. fortunei from my tree.

I would worry about rodents nesting in that old stuff but I agree it would probably look funny with it cut off.

Wow! sounds like you have a great selection of palms growing. Keep me posted on how those butia capitata seeds are doing that i sent you.

I just potted the first one yesterday. I find butia eriospatha seedlings grow quite quickly so I am hoping for the same with b. capitata.
The palm that has impressed me so far is the brahea armata. Since I got it in February it has produced three new fronds. However I think I was too concerned about watering it and some of the older fronds are in rough shape. I am planting it in the ground this weekend.
I'll post pics on Sunday.
