Palm Seedling Pots from Stuewe Company

Post by lucky1 »

Can't remember under which post we discussed this company.
Great customer service from them.

My order is en route to B.C. Canada from Oregon.

But look at all the "border BS" that's involved in sending 100 plant pots:

Get a load of the extra charges I had to pay when UPS delivered today.

GST Tax 4.87; brokerage fee $29.70; brokerage GST tax $3.56 = $38.13

On principle alone, I may apply for a refund of the brokerage fees/taxes from our government.
These tree pots weren't available at any BC nurseries or silviculture companies, nor at ebay.ca.

So much for free trade, huh?

This type of thing really is infuriating! It's one thing that Canadians pay high taxes, but when so much of the revenue seems to be wasted, it seems to defeat the purpose! I am ordering two or three cases of pots from Stuewe, and am definitely not looking forward to any additional customs fees

Yup, my thoughts exactly Cameron.

Anybody suffering from insomnia?
This reply to my email from the Cdn gov't will cure insomnia:

:argue:
Rates of duty vary according to the goods you are importing, the country where the goods were made, and the country from which you are importing them.

While the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has rendered goods manufactured in the United States or Mexico free of customs duties, it does not exempt the goods from the application of the excise duty or tax, the goods and services tax (GST), the provincial sales tax (PST), or the harmonized sales tax (HST) if applicable.

If the plastic pots were made in any other country, an additional duty of 0 - 8.0% would also be applied.

Please note that, where applicable, the GST and the PST, or the HST, are calculated on the duty-paid value of the price you have paid for the goods converted into Canadian currency. Any excise duties or taxes may also be applicable.

More information on the importation of casual (personal) goods can be found in Memorandum D11-4-13, Rules of Origin for Casual Goods Regulations, which is available on the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Web site at:
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications ... 3-eng.html

Goods imported into Canada through the mail or by courier may be subject to duties and taxes in the same manner as goods imported by other means.

Canada Post charges a handling fee of CAN$9.95 for the customs clearance of dutiable and/or taxable goods imported by mail.

When goods are imported by courier, the courier company often uses the services of a licensed customs broker for customs clearance. The fees for these services may be included in the cost of shipment, or they may be charged separately. Fees charged by customs brokers are not regulated by the CBSA. If you have questions about the customs brokerage fees that may be charged on a courier shipment, we suggest you inquire with the courier company before using their services.

Further information on mail and courier imports can be found on the CBSA Web site at:

Postal Program – Importing by Mail
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/import/posta ... u-eng.html

The Courier Low Value Shipment Program
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/import/couri ... u-eng.html

If you disagree with your parcel's assessment, you may ask the CBSA for an adjustment.

To request a reassessment, complete Form B2G, the CBSA Informal Adjustment Request:
http://cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/for ... es/b2g.pdf

Send the completed Form B2G and any supporting documents, such as invoices that show the correct value or other material that describes the products, to the nearest casual refund centre. A list of casual refund centres can be found at:
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/contact/list ... e29-e.html

The CBSA will review your claim and process any applicable refund. The CBSA will not refund any broker's fees or any shipping and handling costs.

Should you require additional assistance with your inquiry, or if this is a commercial importation, we recommend that you contact the Border Information Service (BIS). You can access the BIS line free of charge throughout Canada by calling 1-800-461-9999. If you are calling from outside Canada, you can access the BIS line by calling either 204-983-3500 or 506-636-5064 (long-distance charges will apply). If you call during regular business hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, except holidays), you can speak to an officer by pressing “0” after you have made a selection of one of the 4 menu options.

Thank you for contacting the Canada Border Services Agency.

Ask them to not pack the stacks so tightly...I can't get them apart without breaking the bottoms or tops. :|

Maybe the border Gestapo will be having coffee when your shipment goes through.
Good ole' Cdn government...what a bunch of BS, all to keep thousands of bureaucrats working.

So many differnt taxes and no substitues available :(. If these are excluding shiping than that will more than double the cost of the pots :(. I wonder if Canadian Peat moss for potting soils is cheaper in Canada or in the US?

more than double the cost of the pots
Stuewe's price was 41 cents each for 100 pots.

After all the taxes they cost me 79 cents each.

Guess: cheaper in the USA, like everything else.

I've seen new cars at a US dealer/internet priced at $23,900.
The same car in Canada is $34,000 and up to $37,000.

We Canadians have been ripped off for so long, if we see a 5% price reduction on something, we're grateful.
How stoooooopid of us.
