Cheap Gas in Mexico

Post by lucky1 »

Kinda a long drive for us Canadians, but...

And the Saudis are cutting production because they say there's a glut of oil.

Hmmm...I'm thinking a palm-seed collecting trip to Tamaulipas, Mexico. One long day's drive and we'd be there.
Wouldn't cost too much, either!

Sounds enticing...

what species of palm dominates there?
probably find some outstanding yuccas in the hinterlands.

Hell, I'd just go for the warmth... :P

Tamaulipas

Barb,
don't pay me no mind. I'm just planning a dream road trip.

Yes, warm. Although the cold I got in February got there, too--snow in the mountains, and freezes even on the beach.

This link sells the state to tourists:
http://www.visitmexico.com/en/Visitmexi ... Tamaulipas

As for palms, this is where the famous Sabal minor "Tamaulipas" comes from. Supposedly as cold-hardy as the US S. minor but bigger. My Chameadorea radicalis are from seed collected there. All three are alive and growing after this winter, which says something. Sabal mexicana lives there, as do some Brahea.

I'd like to sugest a "palms north" conference next February in Tampico. Except, there is a drug war going on in Tamaulipas right now.

Yes they did get cold this winter too.
Our RV friends were in So Cal and AZ with a quick jaunt into Mexico.

Those Mexican Sabals may be of even greater interest in the future with such crazy weather as we've seen the last few years.
Presume most of those palms have a coastal influence...and yuccas in the dry elevated interior.

Great conference suggestion, Erik
Maybe the warring factions will be done by then.

We could have a "virtual (pretend) conference".
That'd be a hoot.

Ah, an excuse for more research/internet travel.

I think the cold-hardy palms we get here in "el norte" are from seed collected as high in the mountains as possible. The habitat photos I've seen of Chameadorea and Brahea seem to be from mountains of Tamaulipas.

I'm willing to bet Cocos are grown on the beach there!

Anyway, back to the topic. I'm about to leave for another road trip to Texas. Gas here is cheap--US$3.60/gallon. Not much more in Texas. Oil comes out of the ground and we have refineries galore (e.g., two in Tulsa). :D

I think it'd be easier to believe that from a seed company, than from a palm nursery.

Have fun touring Texas nurseries...

Barb

PS--we're now paying $1.31 a litre for gas (1 litre = 0.264172052 US gallons).
About $5.25 a gallon.  with it only going higher as "the Canadian driving season" begins (affectionately called that when snow tires come off)
