Maybe a dumb question but....

Post by Kansas »

I had two Trachy Takils from Plant Delight. Both did unbelievable over the Summer and put out constant new growth while pot planted.
Once I brought them inside, they developed those black things on emerging new leafs and so I washed them. However I must have left too much water in them cause one got spear pull. I did not throw it away as I heard this is kind of common in Trachys.
With the weather so warm and no end in sight (high 50's for highs & mid 30's for lows thru 10 day forecast) I was thinking of planting this tree directly into the ground tomorrow.
It is moist here in the ground with all the rain we got a couple days ago. I can plant on the South side of the house with little to no wind, a lot of sun. However, waht I was thinking was to keep it somewhat warm when it gets real cold is to take a Milk Carton, cut the bottom of and place it over the tree as a little heat box. IF it gets real cold later, I can cover with a flannel shirt or something at night.
Since it looks dead from spear pull, I thought I had nothing to lose.
What do you think??????
BTW, the other one looks bad now as all the leaves that had soap on them browned. But it does have two new emerging leaves.

Kansas,

I'd keep them in your garage or shed/greenhouse...they may just survive that spear pull come spring/summer...
and come back stronger...

The outside ground will be too much of a shock for them now...

Plant Delight sells very small plants. You can try something I do with very small citrus. Use one of those Tomato cages (Wire) and put it over the tree. Then put a clear plastic garbage bag over the cage with bricks on the edges to keep it from blowing off. Place a 40 watt light bulb inside when the temps drop below freezing...

Never use a black plastic bag as it will cook the plant if you forget to remove the plastic in the morning.

I agree with palmettoman , don't plant it outside. That is the kiss of death right now. Treat it like a sick palm, but, don't over water it or mist it too much. Keep it away from drafts and keep the roots warm (sounds easy). Keep it in the critical care unit of your palm paradise and hope for the best.
