Winter pics!

Post by sashaeffer » Sun Feb 03, 2013 12:48 pm

Let's see PICS of your overwintering palms!

Going to have a mild and sunny week here in Omaha, so took top protection off of 2 Windmills, 3 Needles, 1 Mexican fan palm all planted in the ground and doing well so far.

Opened up 3rd car garage to drag some palms overwintering in there to get some sun and fresh air.

Pics of one of the Needles, and some from the garage. Couple of Mexican Fan Palms and Chinese Fan palm...which as done a lot of growing this winter in there.

Wow, she looks beautiful!

So nice that you can over winter it the way you do without having to tie and bundle it up like most of us have to do.

nice that you can over winter it the way
nope, only good for another year maybe.
Then it's outgrown the palm hut.

I think we all will have to one day learn coconutmike's and beny's Mummy Wrap process as our planted palms outgrow what we can build.

The other pain, Scott, is that these structures take up a lot of space for summer storage, and attract rodents.
Ended up giving the squirrel a nice home.
He repaid me by eating the styrofoam and pooping on the other panels. :?

Yea, I've thought long and hard about how to protect as they get taller, and after seeing the one guys video in New Jersey? using wire cages and just adding to it as needed is seemingly the way to go, and what I will do.

Common sense really, but until I watched his video I hadn't thought of it.

I'm leaning toward sticking with my solid core doors and using 2 x 4s to raise the roof as they go up. As for storage I'm thinking about an outdoor rack of some kind if I can't make it work with my my backyard shed that I built this fall.

Scott & Barb, your palms look great. I have to take off my protection tops every sunny day or I'm afraid that it will get too hot inside. :?

Tim, for the palms on the south side of the house I do have more of a problem with protection huts getting too hot as well. I've seen temps inside(with cover on) of up to 118 deg.

I'm glad I don't keep them air tight or they would really suffer.

Thanks Tim, yes they can really heat up especially late winter.
That's where a couple of vent holes near the top really pay off...lets moisture out.

Scott and Doug, can't find that video, but I don't think he was in New Jersey.
He had built a Tiki bar in his back yard, think it was Pennsylvania????
And they were Washies for sure.

On a humorous note, while I was searching YouTube, I kept finding those Plott guy's videos from Missouri

I'd rather shave my nose than see any more of his stuff.

That's it, Tim, you've found it.

His Youtube videos should be on there somewhere, where he builds his PVC protection around that raised bed/stone planter Washy.
I was soooooo impressed.

Thanks for finding that...had been looking ever since topic came up.
Especially since I found all the Plott videos while looking.
His videos :bs: are almost too much to bear.

Yes, that could be the guy. Cage method, and as palm grows just build another cage just big enough to slide over lower one then as palm grows you just keep sliding the 2nd cage up to gain height...until of course the palm grows taller then you need a 3rd cage and so on. Video I saw the guys palm was maybe 15 ft or more into the air. He had A LOT of plastic wrapped around it to take off!

Those two would have a ton to talk about ...
Any chance you could -- sometime -- get us a list of his Youtube videos?

I'm especially interested in the one where he used PVC pipe sections in his raised stone planter for the Washy.
Sure is hard to find these videos again.

Thanks Tim.

Yup, those are the rest of his Washy videos, Scott, thanks.

The narrow styrofoam panels obviously eliminate the need for a 10-foot pole for top basket stability in high winds.
Tying the 2 baskets together wouldn't prevent the top basket from leaning into the palms unless he uses heavy gauge wire fencing panels.

Glad these videos are back on our radar, thanks guys!
