Two little Sabals grew this winter

Kept these two in the warm basement under lights this winter.
Each grew a strap leaf or two and are now outside doing well.

basically bulletproof to overwinter indoors.

I love Sabal palms (go figure).
I don't have a "riverside" and the only source I know of is Junglemusic. I'll probably get one from Phil once he starts his summer sales.
I planted out two S. mexicana last year and amazingly one is still alive and is growing now

(yes of course it had electric heat for winter, but still-- -30 C?!?).
And I have a bunch of Sabal seedlings. I plan to give a seedling to all my garden visitors who actually know anything about palms.

Anyway, keep us updated on these, and pass a "thanks" to John for getting you the rare riverside. --Erik

They look really good. Especialy after being indoors!

These seem to be yet another palm species that hates to germinate for me ( im assuming no bottom heat is the culprit

) Hopefuly I get one or 2 to pop this summer!

I love sabals too, just cant get them here, and cant seem to germinate them...

Erik I think I know why you love sabals.
Those big strap leaves are irresistible, and NO soft-bodied scale on them, even though all the plants around them this winter were infested.

Jesse, I've heard they're not easy to germinate.
One was germinated by John, the S.mexicana by Barrie...I didn't even try.

Sabal germinate for me well. Beginner's luck I suppose. I don't do anything special.
I plan to make a road trip in autumn to get McCurtain seeds for Damir and I'll send some to you as well if I get down there at the right time to harvest. --Erik

I dont think they are difficult, I think that without bottom heat or constant warmth they take a LONG time to germinate. Erik has the pleasure of getting lots of heat for a longer period of time ( then again, just luck too never know:P )

The S. Minor seeds from Dean in Texas germinated on my cable box.
