Explanation for Extra-Cold Winters in Northeast N.A.

National Science Foundation has an answer for the cold:

Many of us are familiar with the drawing of cold air from the North Polar regions:

Not sure what to think.....there are lots of variables to consider. I think some of the cold we have here (compared to Europe) is that there is so much land mass to the north west of us. The air flow is west to east.....air is flowing from the cold before it hits us. Where in Europe the air flows over warm water before hitting land.

Barb,
thanks. My library gets the paper version of Nature about a week late, so I can read the full report next week. --Erik

The article touches on that.

Turns out the West Coast isn't having much of a spring after all.
Lousy cold winds, little sun and here it is April!
We're usually in T-shirts by now.

Or maybe those guys who say we're into a 30-year cooling period are correct...
I hope not.

Barb got an email a couple of months ago from my friend who works for Environment Canada. He and others in his office are also saying that it is supposed to get colder over the next thirty years. I really hope they are wrong! We were promised warming.

I so hope he is wrong.
Just think what might happen in Canada if they try some of these things to make the world cooler, not like if the people there can head further south. Kiss most of the Canadian crops goodby. Just think of all the fuel it will take to heat everything.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Exactly, Aaron!
We're already tearing down birch stands to heat our homes.

Regular gas is $1.319 a litre here today.
About 5 bucks a gallon.

Aaron crops on our prairies and elsewhere will most definetely have a shorter growing season. Longer winters will mean more burning of fossil fuels, more pollution, a vicious cycle. The only ones happy about that will be the big oil companies. One thing I do know we`ve already decided to move to Latin America if it does get colder and grow our own crops away from big brother.

I was thinking Belize as it would not be so darn hot and dry as Oklahoma: 2nd day in a row hotter here than there.
