Yucca rostrata....not happy

My small Yucca rostrata is not a happy camper lately....more snow in the leaf head.

Yucca elata should be fine:

Big Yucca rostrata is protected, little one is not:

Yucca glauca v stricta is a pancake. You can't even see the Yucca constricta x filamentosa hybrids.

Palm greenhouse......any more snow and it will disappear.

Southern Magnolia 'Edith Bogue' has some heavy branches.

Fox news some places got 17",how much did you get?

Looks beautiful....until it crushes the living s*** out of your plants

Hope your Yuccas can take it.

Models are all over the place on the next storm,
could be a blizzard here or nail the east coast again!

Definitely one to watch!

Trying to sneak above freezing here for a change-
shhhhhh,don't tell anyone-maybe tomorrow too,
nice to see the sun again.

Oh man looks like really heavy snow.

Would you be doing more harm than good by brushing the wet snow out of the unprotected yucca crowns?
Sun would dry them...
but then you lose insulation and cold could get at 'em

I figure WET could induce rot, which can be treated with fungicide.
COLD can kill, so what's best?
Like Jim said, it can crush/snap them too.

What's the lesser of the two evils on this?

We have SO MUCH SNOW now, the piles are freakin huge everywhere.

I'm about ready for it to stop how about you Tim? If we get another blizzard I will not be happy

I guess we got about 10" (25cm) of snow last night. We don't need more next week......so keep that storm out to sea.

I do remove the snow as much as I can from the Y. rostrata leaves since winter moisture is a problem. My rostratas have seen -8F back in 2004-2005 and did fine where a Y. trecueana died. We just dropped to -4F the other day too......we'll see how it fairs.

I agree with Bill....we don't need any more snow.....we need spring.

I know...I ws just joking...I gotta say though, this snow is gorgeous...I'll have some pics on flickr soon too.....Although I am sick of the snow. It makes it soooo hard to jog when you are sliding all over the place. On a warmer note, I collected a load of palm seeds from my trip to Miami last weekend....I have no idea what they are all, but I hope to be pleasantly surprised..

I have my yuccas under an umbrella greenhouse with the sides open for the cool dry air. With all the heavy snow I am afriad the moisture will kill them.

What type of palm tree was overhead/nearby?
It's soooooo hard to ID a seedling palm; even juveniles aren't easy.

I got some 2004 photos of a couple greenhouses in my back yard without sides to them.........they didn't work with the wind.LOL Check out these photos. Notice my little Southern Magnolia.....how little it was back then.

In spring Yucca treculeana died where Yucca rostrata was good......low of -8F killed the Y. treculeana....funny part is that the leaves were still green in late February but it was in decline. The trunk died first.....not the leaves. The least hardiest part of the southwest trunking Yuccas is the trunk. I keep the old leaves on my trunks for added protection.

Hey Barb, I am, pretty sure there were some King Palms, Sabal minors, and a sabla palmetto...I'm soaking them now.

It should be easy to distinguish between those species...oh, in about 5 years from germinating.

I will, if I can get them to germinate. It appears some may have been sitting longer than others...We shall see....

Just came across these beauties today in my wanderings while off from school due to snow again...UGH!

Nice find Mike. They've been there for years now, a guy named Steve planted them and others all around that area over the years. I'm pretty sure they produced seeds last year.

Aren't they right by a bridge heading into Philly?

Steve lives in NJ and has a amazing property from what I'm told. I would really like to meet him this year.

Here is a pic of the exact location. It's on nature walk right over the Tacony Palmyra Bridge from Philly. Thought I'd go do a few trails today...The snow had other things in mind....LOL...Can't wait for this winter to be DONE!!

Hey, Aucubas are an odd plant. I never really noticed how many of themthere are around here until everyone started mentioning them. I always thought they were a "tropical looking" leaf and never gave it much thought. They are nice looking bushes , and are eveyrwhere I now notice. They grow nicely and really big too.
