Winter suprises!!!! ( good and bad)
Long story short a few things happened in the span of 10 minutes i think i should share:
- checked on the calla, canna, iris and lily bulbs in the basement. Some of the canna have some slight mould on them ( i can cut most of it off, and they are drying out a bit)
-some of the iris bulbs sprouted. Left them open to sunlight like an idiot. Going to repot them, and cover the rest until april
-checked on my 30 or so rendom seed projects around the house. I have 6 pommegranet seedlings, One almond ( fromt eh grocerystore unprocessed shelled almond), date palm ( packaged dates withj pits), and... im 90% sure my trachy nanus seeds sprouted.
Sure sign spring is around the corner all!! hang in there

re the mould.
Mix a quarter-cup of hydrogen peroxide into water in a misting bottle for the canna, even after cutting it off.
Bulbs sprouting? wow.
Do you have a cool north wall where you could place them? (with no window)
Congrats on the seed pops.
Let us know how they progress.
I started a whole package of date palm seeds, all popped, and then all promptly shrivelled up and died.
Don't know what I did wrong.
We'll look forward to the T.nanus seedling pics soon.

Thanks barb. THats what im going to do. They apperantly werent dry enough. Firs time over wintering them... live and learn
Ya im pretty sure there all iris. I gotta pot them up. Theyre in the basement, but its really packed full of stuff. Not to mention my guitar and amps.... LOL Ill have to cover the pot a bit or get it out of the sun ( it is a north facing window )
Thats weird about the date palms. For my canary island DP, i waited till the first leaf as pretty much done sprouting. I then msited them for a week, twice a day, to get them used to lower amount of humidity. Going to try that here.
Ill definetly keep an eye on those nanus seeds and keep you posted!!

Good job! I've got some plumeria and macadamia seedlings that both started germinating this week, I'll try to post some pics soon.

Awsome cameron...... Im going to try a few more nuts. Im going to try to grow peanuts ( they are excellent soil builders, and have deep deep root structures that airate the soil, and pulls nutrients up from deep underground).
Still nothing from any citrus seeds. I have another 7 key limes in the fridge im going to harvest the seeds from, would be badass to get some of them

Yes if you think they're strong enough now...but v e r y v e r y g e n t l y.remove it from the bag and pot it up
Lay the germinated seed ever so gently on soil.
You can use a spoon to gently add soil.
And a mister removes air pockets without damaging the tender radicle.
I did that with T.wagnerianus seeds recently, and all but a couple have wilted (for no reason) and died.
Congratulations...bet that wasn't easy.plumeria and macadamia seedlings that both started germinating this week
I would've eaten all the macs.
Look forward to seeing the pics Cameron.

ya.... its kind of a rock and a hard place.... and perfect timing. If you pick em before the root has some strength to it, i guess you shock em to the point of death
At least nanus grows fairly slow........ I jsut hope i dont have to wait so long, that i have all 3 or 4 seeds sprout per bag

Does spear pull have any bonsai effects on the palms?? It isnt much different from a plants new growth being pinched to keep it short......
I know its growing well after 4 years, but is there a more noticable trunk or adult features on your naini tal compared to ones that havnt pulled?

Yes, very different.isnt much different from a plants new growth being pinched to keep it short..
Palms have only one growing tip, or bud.
Whereas other plants can regrow from many points below the pinch.
