Palms Doing Just fine Here in Raytown, MO (KC area)

Hello my name is Tim and I love palm trees! I live in the Kansas City area but have always loved palms for some reason I cant put a finger on. I was so happy the day I discovered there were a few species of palms that could possibly survive and even thrive in my area. In March of 2010 after about 6 months of planning and learning about cold-hardy palms I planted my first palms. Outside 'chillin" right now in the ground here in Raytown are 3 Windmills and a Needle Palm. All are coming thru this winter great so far. The palms have seen 11F already and several nights in the low 20's. We are looking forward to January and expect to see even colder days and nights.

I dont think most people in these parts realize it may be possible to grow these plants. When I tell others about my new hobby I see a lot of excitement! After a few years of success overwintering I plan on really spreading the word around here!

I am happy to finally become a member of this forum. I am glad to see it is somewhat active. I am also thrilled to know there are others like me and many before me who have already been growing cold hardy palms with much success! I will share and post as much of my new found knowledge as well. If it weren't for other palm enthusiasts sharing their stories on the net I would probably never have thought I could have palms that would grow and thrive here.

welcome from down the road a bit in Oklahoma.
I am new to this hobby, too, and have learned a lot from this forum. Of the various palm forums, this one is hands down the best at tips for hardy plants and winter protection. There are a few active members across the river from you in Kansas, and me to your south and Jim to your north and east.
I have to say, we love photos here but it is a bit tricky to figure out how to upload them at first. Nonetheless, we would like to see some snapshots of your palms!
