Looking good! It's always nice to get a few extra weeks of growth, sort of fun living on borrowed time!

The boo's are looking good. You going to cover them all the same this year?

I've only seen one mature P. japonica here. It was in a zone 6b, in a great microclimate, at Vineland nursery. Even after a mild zone 7 winter (low was ~-15C) its foliage was fried. The groves of nearby Fargesia and P. nigra were 100% green!

Thanks paul.

Since i had success last year, im going to cover them the same way, must build a frame around them, so the snow doesnt crush them ( then again , maabey the weight of the snow helped). mabey buried in leaves and a bucket over top. Im petty sure i can get the rufa to survive again, and same with the alata ( one way or the other). The scabrida..... well.... this is a real trial for it..... same with the pseudosasa ( but it was 14 bucks....)

I may derive something crafty for the scabrida, seeing that it maybe only hardy to -17C ( some have said as low as -26C, in finding it hard to figure out of the hardiness for bamboo is leaf burn, top kill or burnt to the ground).

The pseudosasa is beside my compost pile, which is jsut cinderblocks stacked. I think it might hold enough heat to keep it alive. Only time will tell.

Great plants. Keep us updated on those bamboos. I want to try again.
As for Canna, yes! They are stars in my garden right now. I planted (well, W planted more than I did) a bunch this year and will do more next. --Erik

They seem to make a good statement. MY Purperea, which was supposed to get to 12 feet, didnt get past 2, but i had to dig it upo half way in the season, casue it was getting swallowed behind the 4 oclocks. Im gonna have a crap load of canna to dig up this year. Last year we didnt have first frost till soemtime in october. Too bad I was out of commission to enjoy the weather ( H1n1 last halloween  )

Ill post some pics when all is said and done.. plans for next year, bed expantion, musa, eucalyptus, and trachys

Sorry about the H1N1. We got it here, too--W being a nurse meant we went first. We all had it in September.
Last year our first frost came amazingly late as well. I didn't lift any Canna as I was counting on a warm winter. Wrong! I was glad that a couple made it anyway, including a Tropicanna ("Phaison"). As of now, I plan to leave all Canna in the ground this winter.
Hope for the a warmer winter this year, although the forecast is for somewhat cooler than normal weather next week. (And I get a kick out of being 10 oF below Barb as I type this!). --Erik

Great job this year canadian! I hope your frost holds off for awhile so you can enjoy your garden for a little bit longer. I'd suggest covering your plants with sheets or a similar product like frost cloth to extend your season for a few more weeks. Your ground temps are warm enough most likely to keep the freeze off for a little while if you cover before a threatening night.

Cheers to an extended season!

THanks eric, as far as im concerned H1N1 was all bark and no bite. Pnumonia was worse IMO

You guys seem to be staying quite warm. Colorado was 33C yesterday, LA was 45C!!!!!, even new england was mid 25C. IF it wasnt for the snow most of you got last year, you woulda lost a few more things then just a few Canna. FYI, were not ALL cold up here, Regina Saskatchewan was 28C yesterday ( 20C today). Of course, Barb gets the better end of the deal in the BC interior

Thanks for the suggestion Bill. As much as I want it to not stop growing, I really need things to die back so I can get everything started for next year.
Not to sure what i want to happen right now LOL

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Eh jim......

Ya, im gonna cover it. Leaves and a bucket, just to keep the worse of the weather off, and to try to keep it dry. " Golden sword" isnt as hardy as the regular Filamentosa, so i just want to make sure. Im gonna have to eventualy try it uncovered, I jsut dont want to harm my plants lol

Thanks desert :D
