Geez it still ridiculously cold there! Com'mon WTF can you have some relief anytime soon? I'm thinking I'd be blowing a 50000btu propane heater in there for 2-3 hours everyday

Raid all the neighbors propane bottles

Are all those barrels really dead? Some of them don't look all that bad. Heat them up with a mini greenhouse inside your greenhouse and see what happens

BTW if your stuff is really F'd I'll fedex you some biggies when I go back to Gary's place

Hmm. I'll echo Bill's comments.

I do think that your C. imbricata will survive, but it may be smaller than it was last year... It did take me 3 different clones to find one that stands up to the cold/wet up here. Do you have C. kleinae? If not, I can try to send you a piece this spring if mine is still growing well:)

They are not like those big santas and snowmen that you just turn the fan on and they pop back up!-LOL

They are mushy and discolored and they are dead for sure,except for the baby on the one barrel-
I will preform a rescue mission today to get it potted up,rooted and ready to go back in the ring

Today I will go through a site or two and put together a cold hardy barrel order so I can get stuff in before
they set flowers.

The Imbricata has some life on it,I don't want to cut it yet,first I need to get some air circulating in there.
Whats done is done,it may be around 10(f) tonight but I think I will open 2 ends of the cover right now to keep it dry.
One layer of plastic gets a lot of condensation on it,so better cold and dry from here on out-
as I said,whats done is done at this point-It also got up to 93(f) in there yesterday(28 (f) outside) with it closed up,
this is the time of year when the temp starts to skyrocket in there and really needs to just be a rain cover.

lots there! In a few months you'll be enjoying the survivors fully and half forgetting the casualties.
My first impressions...
cacti and succulents: I don't know much about them but I'm watching to learn. I have a designated bed for those by my pool but haven't planted anything in it save for the Hesperaloe. A potted Yucca and cactus hold its place each Summer.
Palms: The Sabal thrilled me the most as I am thinking of adding a "Louisiana" this Spring.
I know nearly nothing about Trithrinax and Mazari, and after seeing your photos, it'll probably stay that way.

Your various Trachy look vastly better than mine. As Barb always says, they need wind protection as much as anything.
I am looking forward next to your Butia seeing the sun.

Jim, I could cry.

Agree that you've got to keep condensation at a minimum now, especially when GH heats up so much when sun shines.
I thought you had a fan in there.
I'd open ONLY one side, the "warm side", and blow a fan from that warm side to dispel all the moisture.

The survivors give us all hope, and look not too bad.
That Naini Tal is a trooper! Hope mine comes from your stock

Glad the baby, which looks fab, was protected by the mom's demise.

Good to see that snow finally melting, you've had it rough.
Those summer pictures are sooooooo nice!
And it'll look like that again.

Yea,plenty of stuff made it fine.
I do have a fan on the open side(the back)
blowing outside air in there.
It was closed the other day and temps outside of 30 or so produced inside temp of 93f
The fan kept it around the low 70s with the back open.
This time of year it is more about keeping them from over heating
I already have an order of flowering barrel(z5)plants ready to go so I will replace wisely

If this dang snow would melt a lot of this stuff could be uncovered during the day,we have had lots
of sun lately and that helps

By the way Jim looking at your summer pictures from last year reminds me why I got through all this aggravation over the winter to keep everything alive!

Yea it's actually been in the mid 30s here but the snow isn't melting fast enough for me!

We will probably get more before it's totally gone.

It was so beautiful, Jim, last summer! I am very sad that many of your plants are dead.
Don't still know what picture is waiting for me when I open the covers (on Palm Sunday ;D ).
But my Cylindropuntia imbricata cv. "Uhlig"overwintered 2 times without severe damages.

I think it will work out for the better,going hardier and the cactus bed all nice and tidy now.
A nice bunch of hardier replacements and beautiful sunny weather.
No complaints!

Can't wait to see what this Naini Tal does this year,after going from 0-10 leaves last year
and starting this year as the healthiest of the bunch!
