Accurate might not be the best description... Dr. John from Co. certainly thinks that there is a correlation between the creeping trunk and cold tolerance. However, at this phase just a hypothesis (Gibbons mentioned in a recent article that he thought the trunk creep might be due to poor light conditions... Which is absolutely absurd imo).

Did this video mention that the trunk creep was associated with cold tolerance? If so, it is a good thing that I turned it off after 15 secs!

As for vendors, I have used Cistus in person and Stokes Tropicals by mail order. I plan to buy a big Sabal from Amazing Gardens in person this Spring.

The creeping trunk does increase the plant's resistance to cold during a period of time. It protects the growing point from cold (more insulation/more warmth from the ground). Once the growing point goes moves higher in the plant, it becomes useless. So it doesn't make the actually plant more cold hardy but the growth habit increases its resistance to cold while the growing point is protected.
