Hi, I live in zone 7a. I've been growing palms in the front yard for the past 10 years. I found this site while searching for information on palms. Hope to learn a thing or two. I started out with Rhapidophyllum hystrix, Sabal louisiana, Sabal minor and Cycas revoluta. Then added a Trachycarpus fortunei, three Serenoa repens and a couple of Dioon edule. I the last couple of years I've got Chamaerops humilis, Butia capitata and Zamia pumila. I'm waiting to see how everything makes it this year and find something new to try!

Yes, I have 2 outside now and another indoors. I'm just waiting to see how the others do this winter. They have been out for a couple of summers. This is their second winter. They are supposed to be more cold hardy than Cycas revoluta and I have had revoluta in the ground for 10 yrs.

I have bought plants wherever I can find them. In the spring, I walk thru HD and Lo's every week or so. I keep an eye on ebay and other web sites. I got my first from Don the Palm man, here in OKC. He has the amazing gardens website. I bought all my Sabals and Rhapidophyllum from him. He is also knows alot about growing palms here. Last year I found a greenhouse near Tyler Tx that sells hardy palms and cycads. Cactus Ranch, they set up at Canton Texas for the big trades day there.

Does "Don the palm man" still have a retail operation in OKC? The website seems up-to-date for reptiles but the palm list (http://www.alligatoralley.com/plantlocal.html) has Spring, 2006 for the date.The only email I see is for Bryan, who I infer runs the reptile side. I'd like to drive there in the Spring with my truck and bring home some large Sabal.
Other than that, I do what you do: prowl HD and Lowes for plants sent here but which were probably intended for Texas, plus I bring things home from vacations to warmer climates.

Its been 2-3 years since I spoke with Don, but I think he is still around. Remind me after the first of the year and I will try to get in touch with him. Last time I talked with him he was reducing his palms and working on cold hardy citrus. Check out citsumaquat.com.

Thanks, Jim. I had seen that new website but did not connect it with the Amazing Gardens one. I'd love to grow a citrus in the ground here.
I'll get in touch with you in a couple of months for your help in tracking down Don to see if he will have any large Sabal to sell.

Jim, thanks for posting those pictures.

They're certainly of good size, benefitting from warmth provided by the house during winters.
Do you ever wrap/cover them when a cold system is approaching?

In a few years, you'll have to leave your house through a window!

Barb, I try to baby the palms as little as possible. My first plantings were near the house, facing south. We had success growing bananas and Brugmansia in those spots, so when i got interested in palms , it just made sense. Now, as I'm spreading out into the yard, I just pick a spot and hope for the best! I try to plant new palms as early as possible. I will cover the cycads during cold spells and give special care to the newer plants for the first winter or two. I'm willing to accept some frond loss. Its a work in progress.

Did you leave the Brugmansia in the ground? Mine (bought in May and put in the ground; did great) had major leaf damage from the first light frost so I dug it up and brought it in. Do you grow yours as a perennial?

Yes, we have left them in the ground, cut the stalks, cover the base with leaves and pot the cuttings. One year we produced 50 or more plants from them. There is a large pecan tree on the east side of our front yard. Its been shading more and more of my beds. Less sun, less growth, this year we didn't get blooms until late and lost dozens of flowers in an early frost. We also did Datura, they grew like weeds, wait they are weeds! Still trying to get rid of those.

Those clumps started as two 2 gallon needle palms each. They do great here. There is an old plant here in town that has trunked.
