Ok....post your coldest temps of the season.

Mine so far is 9F/-12.7C and to day we did not even make it above 20F/-6.6C. All my yuccas and agavas are all a light black color, I don't think they are very happy today.

Coldest to date:
Toronto (Airport): -2.7C
Kingston: -4.2C

Not too bad so far, but we'll get ours later this week when we hit -10C (or lower!)...

Halifax so far:

-3 C / 26.6 F (TODAY)

It's supposed to be around -5 C (23 F) on tuesday

, but will hopefully warm up to 9 C (48 F) on thursday.

Hard to believe It's been colder here at 35 degrees latitude than you Canadians have experienced, but we have already had 18 oF (-8 oC) and will likely be colder than that Thursday morning. No snow yet, but freezing rain expected tonight.

Wait until Febuary and March when you're spring is beginning and winter is still holding firm here! That's when we get ours...

Let's say -25 C for me in Southwest Calgary, about 20 miles from the airport.

I think it was 23-24 two nights ago from what the computer said. My temperature gauge was in my palm tarp house. 43f in there!

-14c 6f two nights ago. -9c 15f inside palm protection. If you want real cold Edmonton Alberta set a new record for cold a couple of nights ago.-37c -34f. They keep telling us the earth is warming maybe ask these people if they believe that.

Oh, poop! Same brand as mine?

Somebody said we could be getting "crosses" from people's cellphones/garage door openers.
Or my own garage door opener.

Mine will stay off for a few hours and then, presto, up again.
Yet the interior temp never fails.
So it must be the sending unit?

Ive checked to make sure it's not too close to the heater

(didn't meltdown)

Mine aren't working to well either, what a pain! Mine said it was 22f earlier today and trust me it wasn't, my car said it was 38f. Time for a new batch I think.

I only had three. I stuck one in the large Butia shelter. I put a 5-gallon jug of hot tap water in there and snugged the heat tape under the burlap like you suggested, and tried to tie down the whole structure with cord secured to the ground with rebar stakes. I put another under the 20-gallon bucket placed over my two-winters-in-the ground small Butia (my avatar photo) which is spending the night with two hot tap water bottles. I put two old towels over the bucket and up-ended a wheel-barrow over it all so it would not blow away. (The wind is fierce right now!) The third thermometer is in the air in my Gazebo as the "control" in this experiment. I'll let you know what I find.

I cant really memorise the sub zero ones but...

28F = -2C
30F = -1C
32F = 0C
33F = 1C
36F = 2C
37F = 3C
39F = 4C
41F = 5C
43F = 6C
45F = 7C
46F = 8C
48F = 9C
50F = 10C
52F = 11C

I dont know the large minus figures but as far as I know.. 20F = -6C and of course 0F = -18C brrr

Can anyone reccomend a brand for a remote thermometer? I forget what mine was, but I certianly would not reccomend it... If you've had luck, please do share!

the math is easy until I have a neg -0F

(F-32)/1.8 =C

I know what I did wrong now, I need to add the negf to 32 then subtract from zero, then divide by 1.8.

A quick trick I use to figure the temps is-
Every 5c is 9(F) so I know if it's -5c it's 23(F) and down the line,you can estimate within a degree after that pretty easy
-10c is 14(F)
-15c is 5(F)
-20c is -4(F)
-25c is -13(F)
-30c is -22(F)
-35c is -31(F)
-40c is -40(F) I just took it out that far because I like how -40 is -40

And I I don't have anything better to do

All of mine are acurite, I think they have been ok, not great but ok.

I have two. One works without so much as a hiccup. The other pukes out.

Fabulous one = BIOS weather station, comes with wind sensor, max/min readouts/wind chill etc. about $60-70

Crappy one = La Crosse Technology (TINology, more appropriately)

That's pretty chilly Aaron! John in Colorado's trachy might possibly be in jeopardy with -17f. Now that is some cold air! He's planning on opening them Friday. I hope there ok, he did have some c7 lights in there hopefully they made enough heat.

What did you have for a low last night Jim, your weather banner says 3f right now?

It wasn't nearly so cold here, but for the area it was chilly. We've been well below freezing for >30 hours. Last night was about 9 oF (-12 oC)--colder than all of last winter.
The alcohol thermometers in enclosures with my Butia only read down to -5 oC so all I know for sure is, "A fair bit colder than -5 oC." The hot water bottle by the small Butia was frozen this morning, but the 5-gallon jug of hot water next to the large Butia (which has the heat tape) was not frozen, so I trust it did not get too cold. (The thermometer in that enclosure was right at the edge where I could reach it without opening the thing up.)
My Trachy is not in an enclosure at all, just a trunk wrap. Hope it does OK.

Good info guys,heres some more-

Low last night (my house) -2(F) official low 0(F)
G-house(cactus etc)unheated and covered with 1/2' TO 1" SNOW/ICE 12(F) this was as cold as it got in there last year.
G-house umbrellas covered with 3" of snow 15 and 17(F) unheated
Styrofoam containers unheated 7(F) this may be a problem since they are on the same heat circuit as the small um-g-houses which are more efficient as snow covers them completely.
Snow cover kept me from needing to heat last night as temps stayed marginally acceptable to leave heat off in all but the styrofoam containers.
Washy and Butia stayed around 50(F)
Wish I could have sprayed this stuff with freeze-pruf before this event,it will probably arrive today
