Salt Spring Island Jubaea transplant

On Sat. Jan.28 we transplanted a good size Jubaea from one location to another. The job took several hours and some muscle work. The palm weighed between 600-700 lbs. and had a 2'ft. thick diameter trunk and 8'ft fronds. It is now growing in town. The move went perfect. cheers, Joe

After work today I measured the Jubaea. It is growing in town so it is very convenient to see. The frond length is 84" inches, some are a little longer. The trunk diameter is 25" inches and the trunk circumference is 77" inches. WE guesstimate it weighed between 600-700lbs. Joe

Too bad Jubaeas are so expensive... I would love to try one here! Sure it would probably take forever to grow (if it could take the cold) but they look sweet!

We guesstimate that the Jubaea growing here on SSI is at least 30 years old or more. When it first planted it in 1999 it was a crated specimen. It has actually put on a fair bit of trunk growth in 7 years. It wasn't nearly as heavy the first time I help plant it. I was looking at it today and it really does look nice. It gets lots of sun where we planted it and it is fully irrigated in the dry months. Joe

My Jubaea is about 12 inches in circumference which surprised me.However the frond lengths are no longer than a few years ago.Looks like to check they are actually getting bigger you need to put a tape measure around them!
This compares with my Washy Filifera which is over 4 Ft in circumference!

Sounds like you have some awesome palms. I love filifera and I have hoards of small ones I grew from seed. The seed collected in the coldest areas where they can be found growing. I also have filibusta as well. I have one nice robusta in the ground. Cheers, Joe
