John (Okanagan) & Wes: 6 ft+ palms $100 in Victoria

Post by Islander »

Hello
8)
I hope that you had a good summer growing palms. The big Trachy planted in June is growing well. I'm about to plant three 6 ft+ Trachys that must be moved from a construction area in Victoria. They were sold at $100 each plus a free (large) Phormium. The plan is to relocate them to my place on Saturday. I once planted a palm one August and it did well. Trachys are tough so I don't mind planting them in late Sept.

I just love the coast because you can just throw in instant palms in the yard. Visitors prefer the T. wagnerianus palms and the Butia. Having said that the Butia needs some winter care. I never imagined that I'd be living with palms and avoiding a hurricane once I left Halifax, NS. Frost used to cover everything by this time of year at Victoria's latitude in Ontario. We take Trachys for granted in Victoria and some owners let summer drought get to them which is a shame. John, you're right that no other tree compares to a palm. But curious as I am about things I have a Puzzle tree and a Dinosaur tree.
