Greenhouse palm: Licuala mapu

Post by Pazuzu » Sat Dec 31, 2005 8:01 am

This is one of the more unusual palms that I have. This palm is so slow growing, I am 45 now and by the time it actually suckers I have a good chance of being dead. I have had it for 2 years. Its planted in the ground in the greenhouse. That's it, the little variegated mapu squeezed in between the striped Calathea and the potted Alocasia cuprea. Anyone else growing this one? Any hints to speed it up?Image

Palms and age

I like you are in my mid 40's and I too am concerned about how slow some of these palms grow. I have had to resort to buying larger more expensive plants otherwise I will never see them get to a good size.
Trachycarpus species seem to grow very quickly and are very hardy. I have some very large specimens now that produce lots of seeds. Here in North Vancouver the seeds are ripe in February.
