Bismarckia hardiness???

Post by cedardave »

Hello, I just bought a couple of Bismarckia palms. The nursery didnt know anything about them so here I am. Are these as cold hardy as the windmill palm?I suspect not but could use some care and maintenance advice from anyone who may have these.

They can be damaged by freezing temperatures. They only take down to the lower 20's F if that.

Just a few thoughts... Bismarckia is a semi-tropical species. Planted out, these are marginal in Orlando, FL -- and their cold-hardiness is NOWHERE NEAR that of a windmill palm. Their huge size (~15 foot spread as a juvenile) would also preclude growing them in most greenhouses.

I was just in Orlando and I saw lots of them around Disneyworld and Universal studios. They look like they have been there awhile. They looked like they were in fantastic shape.
