Dioon spinulosum

Post by Laaz »

Got a great deal on a 15 Gal. Dioon spinulosum yesterday. Was originally $150 marked down to $79 and half price yesterday at $40. There are 7 heads coming out of it.

Laaz, I think you will find this to be one of your favorite buys ever.
When it comes to Cycad/Dioon, next to the "Nova Wilailak", the Spinulosum is my favorite. Not sure what the reports say, but I can say from MY personal experience, it is a fast grower.

Barb this is the first Dioon I have played with so I don't know they are pups in the same sense as the Sago's have. Three are the same size & four are smaller. I have to do some reading up on the Dioon species. Cycas revoluta are a dime a dozen here & very cheap, but not many have Dioon's.... I just ordered some from Robert Chumley & will be ordering quite a few more soon.

Did you get a Spinulosum from Robert?
I got two from him and in the 7 months I have had them in a Zone 5 with Greenhouse, they have flushed twice, which if your new to Dioons is FAST!!

Laaz ... I have a couple of them (tender for me zone 9b at least) and they are quite grayish/silver in comparison. It may have more to do with the lighting in your photos.

Cheers, Barrie.

Hey Wes. No I didn't get any from Robert. What I ordered from Robert is Cycas Taitungensis, Dioon Edule. Chamaedorea Macrospadix and Chamaedorea Stolenifera.

Barrie I planted it right next to the brick wall in a very protected area. I will throw a blanket over it when we get a cold snap. It has a span of over 6 ft now... I'm going to be ordering a few Cycas debaoensis very soon as well.

Can't wait to see the pics of all those new plants, Laaz.
Great variety.

And if you get a chance, how about a (horizontal) pic of your Spinulosum's pups?

BTW, thought you were running out of space? ha ha

Thanks for that pic.
Wow, Laaz, looks like the nursery actually cut pups off !

From the many leaf bases, wonder if someone more experienced than me can guess how old it is.:D
You scored an unbelievable deal!
