A serious chance for big snow.

Post by Barrie »

The next several days are expected to have a great potential for snow as far west as the coastal regions of the PNW. Temps aren't expected to be terribly cold and that will be a recipe for heavy wet snow. A mild onshore pacific front is forecast for Monday bringing the temps into the mid 50's (12c - 13c). In the mean time it's looking ugly!

I'll post some pix if we get snow and it's never pretty. Heavy as wet cement on the palm fronds etc creates a shocking responce from the viewer. I doubt we'll get as cold as the EC predicted low of -6c, although it's possible for the airport location which is currently showing -2 celcius (21:15 hrs). We're currently at +1.5c so we could dip to -3c perhaps. Routinely in past experience this airport location is almost always colder. Our biggest hurddle will be Sat. - Sunday (Dec 1 and 2) for snow.

Good Luck Barrie. I hope that you don't get enough snow to damage anything.

As I figured, not as cold as forecast last night. The coldest temp was at sunrise today showing 27.5f (-2.5c). Rather frosty out but the sun should take care of that in short order. Now ... to survive the weekend!

snow time

No we don't get wind and snow. When it snows here it's always eerily calm. The snow being forecast now could be as much as 25 cm (10" if my metric conversion is correct) ... we may or may not see that much but I think a minimum of say 4" is likely overnight. I hope my back is up to the challenge of the shovel tomorrow! Shame really since rain is coming late Sunday and certainly Monday.

I should clarify the wind / snow comment. That combo is more evident right at or near seaside locations as was observed today. I work at such a spot and today the snow was flying at 15 to gusts of 22 knots. Here at home I have recieved a total of 5 inches of snow (far less wind) as of 10 pm and at this point none is falling. Current temp is just under the freezing point and expected to remain fairly constant overnight.

Here's what we woke up to this morning, 5" of snow and the temp was 31.7f, so just a whisker under the freezing point.
Rain and temps aproaching 15C (59f) tomorrow should make for a gong show!

Cheers, Barrie.

PALMETTOMAN ... Yes the pics do seem to convey contrasting concepts, snow and palms. The temps have been at or just under freezing for this 36 hour event, but now (Sunday evening) the thaw is already evident.
Eucalyptus trees are fine. I did shake a few to release the heavy wet snow that bends and weighs down branches or entire small trees. But yes, all is good with those Eucs.

euchys & palms

Post by PALMETTOMAN »

Barrie...it's good to here your euchy trees didn't snap in this blast...

How did your palms make out in your greenhouse?..Did you have to heat it?..What was the low temp. inside...I'm asking cause I know you have quite an assortment of palms in there...

I never heat my greenhouse (coldframe) and all the plants are fine. I have some Haas Avocado trees that seem fine for the past few years, and they're likely the most tender plants I have aside from a Key lime which is also fine. They'll defoliate if temps drop below -5c in there, so kinda rare.
This season has seen a one night low of -2.5c but the few others have just been under the frost point.

I really like the look of Palm trees in the snow. I'm glad that things turned out better than forecast.

We went up to Grande Prairie on the weekend and I roughed in part of my daughter's basement bathroom. I was surprised how tough our Xtrail was. Without being plugged in it started, not without complaints, at -30*C. We drove back today stopping in Grimshaw to pick up our grand niece. The trip was 700 km with most of it in snow and blowing snow. Temperatures varied from -32*C/ windchill -43*C Near Grimshaw to -17*C/windchill -28*C when we got home. It took us 10 hours driving time in white out to near whiteout conditions. It was the worst weather that I have driven in over the last 15 years. I was happy to get back home and find that my niece had shoveled the 4" of snow that we got while I was away.

Good lord! I can't image those conditions let alone consider driving them Allen! So I guess our -0.7 celcius pales in comparison. You're one serious Canuck
The snow is a memory now with 12C (54F) today and rain, lots of it at times, but not enough to cancel our supper BBQ.
I'm assuming "being plugged in" is in reference to an engine block heater? All I need here is enough wiper fluid to clean the windshield while driving.

I would even take the rain if I could get the 12*C. You are lucky as we will not see much relief from -20*C lows for another week.

I will be thinking of you when I go out to shovel snow this PM.

Not a flake to be seen Allen. Yesterdays rain took of that thankfully since my lower back won't take much of that.
Go easy when shoveling! Maybe you have the light fluffy snow and not the heavy wet stuff.

Post by PALMETTOMAN »

Snow is snow...its the cold that sucks...I see Edmonton @ almost -30C..??..

Our temps have dipped to night-time lows of around -8C-10C...It may be the breaking point to fire up my palm house heaters...

It isn't even winter yet??

The -28*C was an anomaly. For some reason a pocket of cold air was sitting over the international airport. Now the temperature at the airport is back to 'normal'.

I'm glad that you don't get winter yet. We usually get winter in mid November.

Barrie, did you get your avocado from seed? Reason I ask, I was at my wife's Grandmother's today and she gave me a seed and asked if I could use it.
So I took it hoping I can give her an avocado in the future.

Kansas ... yes the three avocado plants I have are all from seed. I really need to pot them up into larger 5 gallon pots as they're currently in 2 gallon pots and are at least 5 feet tall, so they'd be quite root bound. I have a few days off now so I'll head down to the greenhouse and sort that out ASAP.
I never expected them to last for as long as they have, especially since I don't heat the greenhouse and they're at the mercy of the temperature gods. Last year we had a low of -7.9c (18f) and many leaves dropped (not all) and some tender tip growth died back. Once spring was in full swing, they rebounded quickly.

Cheers, Barrie.
