A few from Salt Spring Island.

Post by Barrie »

A friend of mine from Salt Spring Isl. sent me these pics all taken there recently. It's one of the mildest climates in Canada and the pics tell the tale. Nice thing is it's a short drive and a 20 minute ferry ride from my house.

Cheers, Barrie.

Laaz ... You should get a hold of some Cordyline australis seed. It's fairly cheap as far as seeds go and probably even free if you put the word out on the different forums. They're very fast growing and should get to 6' in just a few years. They're a funny plant really. I've seen examples of them being cold damaged while others right next to them are unharmed. I'm not sure how well adjusted they are to the prolonged heat and humidity of the SE. Perhaps that's why they're not grown so much there. Either way, I think they'd be a good looking, inexpensive tropical around Charleston or any growable regions in S. Carolina.

Arctic Palm ... "I so live in the wrong part of Canada..." well maybe, but folks here want a better climate too. It's human nature to want something as they perceive as better. Hey, you're not in Winnepeg!

Cheers, Barrie.

salt spring cordies

Post by PALMETTOMAN »

Neat pics Barrie....!

Arctic palm...You can grow those here in S/Ontario in pots and then garage them when the temps drop below -5C..

Broadway Nurseries sells them...

I have 2 eight footers and they are awesome...Last year they stayed outside till the Jan 15 freezeup...!

Its not coastal BC but...you just have to work a little harder..lol...

Barrie..I as well don't see a lot of those cordies when I'm in S/Carolina either? Maybe its the extreme heat??

Maybe they prefer a New Zealand/southern Australian/BC climate??
