Trachycarpus Fortunei

Post by oppalm »

I was out in the backyard taking some pictures yesterday and felt the need to post a couple of pictures and start a discussion about container size. See the following 2 pictures of Trachycarpus Fortunei that were germinated in March 2006, and transplanted to a 20oz red plastic up (see picture 1) . In March 2007 I moved one of them to a 1 gallon container and they were set side by side on a bench in my backyard where they both received about 3 hours (10:00 am to 1:00 pm) of sun a day this summer 2007.

Its not as easy to tell from the pictures , but the Trach Fortunei in Pic #2 (the 1 gallon container) is almost twice as big as Pic #1 (the 20oz cup).

My plans are to keep track of these two and next year plant #1 into a 2 gallon container and see if it explodes with growth as I am sure its root system will be very well established and ready for growth.

Anybody have similar experiences with container size?

I've noticed that the most growth appears in pots with the most volume. The nutrients should be easier to absorb when there is more material to search through.
