15 foot Palmetto spotted in Kelowna

Post by Jay-Admin »

I was driving by an excavating and landscape company today when I noticed what looks like a Palmetto palm planted in their front yard. Must have been about fifteen feet tall. Just had Christmas lights around it. I sure hope they plan on more winter protection. :) I wish I could get a picture of it.

Regards,
Jay

Jay where is it in town I would like to see it.That would be a shame if they don`t know what they have and not protect it.

Ya, especially at this point where you've had some damaging freezes there.

Cheers, Barrie.

John, It's on Sexsmith rd. I think just before campion rd. I didn't get a good look because I was in my work truck and couldn't stop. Snap a pic if you can. :)

Wow! If it only had been protected in time... I assume that the plam experienced Kelowna's -16.5c freeze on the 2nd. Plus the 96+ hours that Kelowna was below freezing that week... Unfortunately, that would be more then enough to kill an unestablished palmetto (and probably even an established one...)

Well, I can't say it wasn't protected. I just happened to see it yesterday in the daytime when it was 2*C. Maybe they have protected it on the coldest temps? Not sure. We'll see this Spring. :D

Replica

Post by Okanagan desert-palms »

Sorry guys and gals the only thing this palm has for roots are cement shoes. It looks real from 50 ft away. I talked to the guy and he says he bought it from China $3800.00. I told him about real palms like Needles ,Trachy`s ,Sabals and gave him palmsnorth.com web site. The thing I found strange is that the replica is a cross between a Palmetto trunk and Trachy fronds.

Ha ha ha. I was duped by a fake palm. :D I was driving and just got a glance at it. Looks neat anyway but $3800 seems a little pricey to me for a fake palm. :)

If he paid $3800.00 for it from China, the shipping was probably $3,000 of the cost.

But it did get attention.

I don't really like fake palms but that one looks really good, but not $3800.00 worth.

Thanks

Fake palm grove?

Post by Okanagan desert-palms »

I gotta see this. He said he was going to be putting fake palms around pools and ponds through his landscaping business when I talked to him in Dec. Obviously he didn`t take my suggestion for real palms.Anybody can have a fake only a few can have the real deal. I`ll go and take some more pics.

Barrie...wonder how many kids have been nearly-garroted by those guy wires.

If that was in Canada, there'd be 72 signs warning people of the danger of guy wires,
and a 73rd warning people of the danger of numerous signs

Kinda cool looking, though.

Steve and Kansas Wes: have you seen this?
Does the middle one have frizzle top? :|

Laaz and Taylor I think the guy selling these said there is a five year warranty on the whole palm. The palms come from a company in China so I don`t know how they would honor the warranty.

I've got to give the guy credit for trying...
But that cycad plastique is awful.
I thought you couldn't freeze banana fruit

Didn't you say a few months back that these things cost 6 grand? or was it 600?

Thanks for snapping those pics, John.
They probably thought you want to buy the place.

I wonder how long before the FDA recall?
