My palm looks dead after the summer but right now on November 17 it is still showing some green but the palm looks like its rotting. Livistonia chinensis I have
heard that it can take some heat and some drought conditions. But there summer had damaged 90% of the palm and I watered it all summer every day. I had
lost my tulip tree and they do well in the summer in places like Kentucky where the summer is 2 times hotter than are area. But is was planted 2 years ago.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

It does look pretty rough. Why not throw some mulch on it and hope for the best. It could restart from the roots in the spring.
The 2 that I planted this summer had most of the existing fronds die back from the weather. But as fall set in each had several new fronds just starting to grow.

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps
Thanks for some help and info everyone. I could throw some mulch on it and see if I can get new shoots on it but if the winter becomes severe, I might not happen. Last winter was mild at first and then it got extremely brutal. My palm had almost like yours grew a new frond but its now starting to die off a bit.
They grow these palms in Orlando FL and tend to survive very well even when they are young but do not do well in some places in Canada. I think its our
very poor soil that we have.
Our soil is mostly clay and also had limestone and shale and some granite but we not on the Canadian shield but it starts north of us around Madoc Ontario.
I am not sure if its acidic or alkaline. The palm sure does not like our soil that for sure.
yuccaman ... The one thing that you neglected to mention, is that it won't like your Canadian winter climate either. Even in the mildest places you can find around the extreme coastal regions of BC, it's considered borderline palm. If it's going into winter that weak, anything short of a heated greenhouse around it, isn't going to help.
Hey Barrie! I thinking about leaving it out in the winter to die because the summer got a hold of it and everything was burnt by the sun and lost its leaves due to
the lack of moisture but I did water it everyday but the drought we had was to much.
Well I could bring it in but I think that it be dead already. I could heat green house it to see for the spring if I get new shoots but I believe what you said that its
weak and I think it could be impossible when its a borderline palm but the one I have is weak and rotted anyway.
Hey PALMETTOMAN, you are lucky that you kept it alive for 7 years. For me the palm in the summer dried up and defoliated by 90%. I am not to sure if I will try
the needle palm for next year see if it does better. If not, its the last time I will be growing palms. I will water it even more in the summer if its a very dry one.
Hey Palmettoman! I might pick on up for $10.00 and I will try again getting it through the summer. I will take your advice for the semi shade and the morning
sun. I will bring in whats left of the other palm and get it to survive. I am not sure about winter but I could the heated structure over it but it will be hard aswell.
Yuccaman..Mine is garaged now and its doing okay...It can take some cold but def.not the wind chills..
I used Carl Pool palm feed/fertilizer this year and she greened up nice...I think they might do okay in a sheltered palm house if you can keep the temps at around 40F plus over the winter...The problem is they tend to spread out so you'll need lots of space!
Mine has spent the last several years in my semi-heated garage during the winter and does okay...its kind of hardened to the sun and cool temps...This year it was in the courtyard from mid March to just last wk...out of the wind and close to the house..
I have a small needle palm..(slow growing as heck)..its still outside and really wasn't fazed by the sleet and cold..
