I double potted my palm seedlings and buried them in the flower bed early this summer, planning to pull the pots out this fall for the winter. When the time came to pull them up, 2 of the W. filifera wouldn't come up easily. When I dug up the first one, it had a root that extended over a foot out the bottom of the pot.
I have left the other one in the ground and am going to try insulating around it to see if it will survive where it is. So far the filifera, 2 1/2 years from seed, and 2 Sabal minors, 1 1/2 years, have survived -10* C.

What I did this year "kinda" worked, but I DID have some roots find their way around it...
I took a heavy mesh cloth and cut it and taped it to the bottom of the pot. THEN pot planted in the ground. It worked well enough that I will do the same next year. The first year I pot planted, I did nothing and I had to worry for weeks after breaking every dang trees roots I planted.
