PDP Question

Post by Kansas »

I have a PDP that I thoguht at one time was dead. It had spear pull last Winter, then I sat it outside and noticed it was growing anew spear. So I pot planted it this Spring. When I pot planted it, I wrapped a cloth mesh over the drainage holes to keep the roots from growing into the ground so I wouldn't have to cut the roots.
This Summer it grew over 10" of trunk. Absolutly unbelievable growth.
I went to pull it out yesterday and the roots SHOT out the drainage holes and all but one stayed inside the mesh.
So my two questions...
1) Cutting that one root won't hurt it will it? I know the roots are VERY VERY tender on these.
2) Should I re pot it now (has a BUNCH of roots coming out) or keep it in a bucket with soil on the bottom and re pot next Spring????

Air Pruning

Post by Knnn »

I potted a 5 gallon double up in one of these laundry tubs, was also surprised to find quite a bit of root growth out the bottom.
( These must have appreciated all the rain this year )

Instead of cutting the roots just sit it up on something so the excess roots are exposed to the air. they will eventually dry out and die back. This seems less traumatic than cutting. Might be best to wait till Spring to re-pot.
