Spiders
What is every bodies opinions, no right or wrong, just need some input.
I had a "Colored Lizard" in the greenhouse to keep down bugs and spiders but he got out and never came back.
So now I have a bunch of spiders in the greenhouse. However, I am not killing them because I think they are keeping the insect and mite problems way down. Am I correct or should I kill them???? All year, I think I have seen maybe two grasshoppers in the greenhouse and thats about all.
I hunt rattlesnakes, but I HATE spiders. But I can take them if they are helping me out.

Every morning before I leave to work, this is around 5 am,I walk thru the garden, and I tell you there is spider webs everywhere,I walk into them, and sometimes the spiders get on me,and have been bite once or twice, but they all beneifical
to the garden, for they help keep the bad insects at bay.
And yes my greenhouse has lots of them!!! BTW,I don't like them very much either!!!

I've never been the least bit put off by spiders and I find them facinating. I've been stung far more by wasps (nasty things) than been bitten by spiders. If you've never been stung by a wasp, envision a cigar being butted out on your skin. Spiders do keep many insects at bay, so don't feel too bad about having them around.

gotta agree. leave them. However, I'd get rid of any brown wolf spiders or other potentially dangerous ones if you see them. A healthy dose of respect for any spider you can't identify is wise.

Hey Kansas,
Only a few spiders we have to worry about in Kansas, the brown recluse and the black widow. I have seen both in Johnson County, but Lawrence has some for the largest browns I have ever seen. As far as the green house I would leave most. I agree with oppalm about spiders and respect. BTW ticks bother me much worse.

Wife was bitten by a brown, back in 1964,while giving birth to number 2 daughter in the hospital in Topeka, lucky enough the doctor got right on it,she was bit on both legs, said the holes as big as dimes but very deep and very painful, took several months to heal,so be careful around the big brown recluse.

My Mom was bitten by a Black Widow a few years back. My problem is, is that my house is one step away from a Recluse infestation. They are everywhere. I REALLY need to find a butt load of lil Bull, Garder, & Ring Neck snakes to put around the house. But since I got promoted, I am not in the fields and trenches like I used to be.
Green, are you in Lawrence area???

Hey Topicman,
Thanks for the heads up about this forum. Lots of post to read!
Kansas,
I live in Eudora, just on the east side of Lawrence.
I know several good spots for ringnecks and rattlesnakes. Its only about 10 mins from here, if you ever find some free time. But bugspray is needed, the rattlesnake area is were I find some lime infected ticks about 12 years ago.
On a side not I did post a intro in the off topic area where I will post a few picks of some garden work later.

Ben ,
Your welcome,
Just a note about your bamboo,as it's grows taller,it becomes weaker, and snow and ice as well as heavy rains will bend it to the ground,I had to weld fence post together to about 15 ft tall, and run a cable with the green vinyl coating on both sides of the bamboo to keep it erect at these times of bad weather.
As the bamboo grows and becomes thicker the poles with green wire are no longer visible
Don.

Hello guys, I saw the thread and had to post. I like spiders I always have but the webs get annoying sometimes. Now I keep lots of praying mantis around, the kids love playing with them and they eat everything even the spiders when theres more than there should be. I buy the egg cases early spring put them out in spring and when summer arrives these guys guard the yard like pitbulls, but they dont bite humans, they will sit on fence polls and in trees sitting still and when a bug passes in front of them they kill and eat it. They eat there weight in bugs every day I have seen the big ones 6 inches or so even eating small mice and frogs. Heres the cool website I order stuff from.

The Praying mantis are a good idea! ( Thank You..... I'll check into that for next year)
I've left the spiders alone this year, the webs are annoying ,but they do seem to be keeping the other insects in check.

They eat anything, venom and all even poisonus spiders and scorpions everything!! lol they eat everything head first. The only thing that puts up a fight is when a female praying mantis eats a male praying mantis. And if theres a part they dont like they use the jaws like scissors and cut the bad parts off and throw them on the ground. They are real cool to watch.
