That is quite the collection. Where do you put them during the winter?

You don't have to be crazy to grow palms in Alberta..... But it helps

How long have you had your first Trachy for and has it overwintered here yet?
I want to plant mine in the garden, but I am worried about loosing it. Yours looks great by the way .... keep it up.

Talk to you soon,

Niagara is a higher zone then where I am. I am 6a maybe 6b, Niagara can be considered a 7a but is officially a zone 6b. In short, I would plant it and give it some time to root before winter sets in. Build it a shelter for winter and get a space heater or another form of heat incase it gets really cold. How big is your trachy? Post some pics.
There is a guy I know who planted a trachy in Niagara and it survived with no protection. Lost all its fans but servived.

Christmas and Bismark

Post by Okanagan desert-palms »

Arctic did you transplant that Christmas palm into a larger pot? That would really help it if not. Where did you get your Bismark nobilis? Looks like everything is doing great at your place.

Okanagan desert-palms,

I got it at Broadway gardens here. It was very inexpensive. $25.00 I think...maybe $35.00. The Christmas was removed from a 12" growing container (very undersized) to a 18" bucket. Could probably use a larger container still.

It is one of my Fav's. I hope I can keep it alive for a few years. I am already pondering winter protection.

hardy palms

Post by PALMETTOMAN »

yeah-(bismarcka),

since its still potted you may want to harden it off this fall/winter...

keep it out as long as you can and out of the winds...

I really love that palm..I just was down in carolina and wish I had brought one back...

Well,
If this winter is anything like last winter I won't be bringing anything hardy in till January. I need to research the hardiness for all my palms so I know when to bring them in.
If I ever went to South Carolina in a car I would be in trouble.!!! I would need a truck.

bismarka

Lets hope we have a repeat of last years Dec-mid Jan but thats a long way off..and we don't want to rush it..

After growing the windmill's for 5 years now I have concluded mine for the most part like the humidity but only partial sun (morning and late noons)..

The ones in all day sun get a little stress with tip burn and folding leaves..

The ones in partial sun/shade are looking really good...I'll post some pics when I get a sec.

In Carolina I noticed a few nurseries keep their windmills in partial sun/shade...

I've been fertilizing my windmills/euro's/jellies etc. with Carl Poole palm fertilizer...good stuff if you can score some here..

Arctic, and everyone, first of all great looking and healthy palms!!
Now,I need to know if anyone is using manganese when fertilizing there palms?
After going to the coop, feedstore to purchase some ,all I could find it in was Chelated Iron, the liquid iron kind, any comments,on any other products that might have it in also?

Tropicman,

Try www.treehelp.com. They sell spikes for palms, all kinds of spikes. I do use manganese. Try that site and see what you think.
