Finally starting to unwrap some palms..

I started to unwrap some palms at my home, all protected with the wrapping method. My oldest Trachy as suffered from this terrible winter here in north east near Montréal. It s completely defoliated, but the spear looks ok. And the other one , 8 feet tall, had the same result. I have 2 big Needle palms , 4 -5 foots tall, one look very good, no dommage and the other one is defoliated . I don t know why, both were protected with the same technique, maybe the T3 in one has failed and the palm had no heat during the winter .
The Chamaerops humilis looks not to bad. But i have another Trachy 8 foots, looks very bad.
I protected another Needle palm this winter with only a tarp and snow cover on it, no heat. I took off the tarp yesterday and it looks the same when i protected it last november. No dommage. It s located near the fondation wall of my house and never the temp. went down Under -6c even at -30c outside ....so the snow insulate vey well.
I think the problem with the wrapping is the heat cable burns the foliage when we have a very cold winter. Maybe the solution is to put only the heat cable on ground and the other one around the trunck and stop it a where the foliage begin ?

I am seeing alot of green there so I dont think they were hurt too bad. I would continue to keep them dry just in cause there is some spear damage. I see a lot snow still hanging around. Looks like you all still suffering from winter. Hope they come back fast this spring.

Not too bad Ben. Lots of green for sure. By June/July you won't even notice.

The temp. will warm up next days...will be over the 10c, 50f mark starting friday and for long the forecaster can see ...finally...and up to 16c, 60f next week , the spring here is 2-3 weeks.lol...will unwrap lot of palms starting wednesday, hope they will have best shape .
I have one at my home, will unwrap tomorrow, instead have heatcable i used a 30 feets del Christmas cord and it looks in best shape than the one who has the heatcable. So i think the heatcable around the foliage is not very good during an hard winter. But in normal winter it s seem ok.
Finally, i make the same mistake each year, overprotect them. The Trachy can easilly take -15c without damage. So when using heatcable with the wrapping, avoid puting the cable around the foliage. Anyway, the heat produced by the cable will go up and warm the foliage indirectly.

There s some others palms i unwrapped yesterday. They look pretty fine, but some have had some damage, had to cut some fronds. But im pretty happy about the result regarding the horrible winter we had here. The worst till 115 years they says ...

Here s some pics, they were all protected with the wrapping. Finally the heaat cable did not burn a lot of leaves. But next time i will put maybe an arbotex between the cable and the foliage to prevent the burn.
