Bought some new cacti today, any idea if they are hardy enough to make it through a UK winter if kept dry? My opuntias are putting on some new growth now.

Love the arid bed, and sure like it when a Phoenix is included.
Good work!

I found an aloe striatula today after months of searching. It makes a nice addition to the arid bed which has filled out nicely in a short period of time. I didn't realise myself until I saw the pictures on here from May.

Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

Lets hope it survives a winter here. Anything like last year and it should be fine, minus the small cacti which I bought cheap as houseplants. It will need to be mild and dry for them which doesn't happen here. Cold is frosty and dry, mild is wet and windy, usually.DesertZone wrote:How did I miss this post. Looks good!

Here's an update on the arid bed in mid winter, some casualties and surprises already.

I only protect when its cold and remove as soon as it turns mild, to allow airflow to the palms. It's a lot of messing around but our winters the temps are up and down.lucky1 wrote:A surprise to see protection REMOVED on New Year's![]()

I'm certainly envious of those temperatures during winter!

I've extended the arid bed to allow for some new plants and to give the Canary Island date palm a central and prominent position in the bed. I've also added some stepping stones to make it easier to get around the car when its on the driveway.
