Three new Yuccas to my collection

Just took delivery of three new Yuccas from a French Nursery in Southern France and very pleased with them as as well but not the delivery costs which was virtually more than the Yuccas
First off is the quite rare Yucca Decipiens which is similar to Yucca Filifera but more hardier (allegedly). Its small compared to my Filifera but still a fine specimen






Next off is Yucca Glauca. I'm particularly pleased to get a specimen of this size... I had a small plant already which was eaten by voracious molluscs. This plant came with a flower shoot






Finally but not least Yucca Flaccida "Ivory Tower". Not common in the UK but available in Europe. I do like the colour combination on this species even more than "color guard"

Very nice yuccas, great size on the first one. I really like the variegated one too, they always provide great color to the garden.

Thanks for your replies I will be planting them out sometime in May. I think the star of the show is that Yucca Flaccida "Ivory Tower" It will be nice to see those leaves on a more mature plant.

great Yuccas! Your Y. decipiens is a beauty. I've seen 'real' specimens in Arizona and I could not tell the difference from Y. filifera. There are a couple different forms of Y. filifera, some less hardy than others. I moisture protected a filifera back in the winter of 2002 and it saw +6F inside the protection and it survived with almost no damage; however, I've killed them in December with lows in the mid teens (F) with all our moisture........dryness is your friend with Mexican Yuccas.

Your Y. glauca is a beauty.........much better looking than most forms. It kinda looks like an Y. elata without filaments at this stage of growth. The bloom will confirm it's ID since glauca will have a racemose bloom.

Hi Tim.... I'll send a pic when Glauca flowers. Lets hope Decipiens is the real deal. The Nursery I bought them from also sells Filifera so hopefully they know the difference

Congratulations with your new Yucca plants´, they are indeed three very nice specimens.

The variegated plant is however not labeled correctly. This specimen is the very rarely seen Yucca filamentosa var. concava forma albo-variegata. I used to have one my self, but it died after it bloomed in 2011, it was probably too weakened from the flowers and the seedpods on it.

I did make a few hybrids with it:

BMJ 2011-028 Yucca (glauca x flaccida (1819A) X (filamentosa ssp. concava albo-variegata (834)).
BMJ 2011-029 Yucca filamentosa ssp. concava albo-variegata (834) X (glauca x flaccida (1819A)).
BMJ 2011-030 Yucca filamentosa ssp. concava albo-variegata (834) X rupicola, Kerr Co., Texas (388B).
BMJ 2011-031 Yucca filamentosa ssp. concava albo-variegata (834) X (hybrid #500 x glauca (2007A)).
BMJ 2011-035 Yucca (hybrid #500 x glauca (2007A)) X (filamentosa ssp. concava albo-variegata (834)).
BMJ 2011-047 Yucca (hybrid #500 x glauca (2007A)) X (filamentosa ssp. Concava albo-variegata (834)).

The seedlings of the Yucca filamentosa ssp. concava albo-variegata X rupicola hybrid looks very nice, I will have to make some photos of it.

Benny.... I hope you are well and enjoying your Yuccas. You are indeed correct and thanks for that information. Your pictures are indeed interesting. Some of the more mature leaves on mine are turning mauve in colour and then brown possibly due to the neverending rain I am receiving at the moment. I can only guess that the plant has been bred commercially with the latin name dropped and "Ivory Tower" introduced?? This came with the plant...

And yes it is a Filamentosa not Flaccida. I look forward to seeing your seedlings
