Bottle palms back inside

March is back-breaking as I move potted plants in and out as weather fluctuates. The three bottle palms are heavy and don't tolerate any frost (I assume--never tested it) so they were the last to go out, this past weekend. Yeah!
Except: forecast for near-record lows tonight. Record for the date is 30F (-1 C) and for tonight 32 F (0 C). So, they came back in, along with foxtail palm, traveler's "palm" and a few other tender potted plants. They'll go back out Saturday.

So, anyone else doing this lately?

Yea,this weather has not been very trustworthy....I have never waited this long to put
out my potted palms from inside the house-maybe next weekend...

Good looking stuff you've got there, good job looking after them in winter.
My bottle looked that good, then it rotted

After a warm and balmy Easter Weekend, we've tanked again.
This April's turning out as cold as the last two years.

How's the Bizzie faring?

Bottles got scale bad this year.
Bizzie looking good, and stayed out last night.

Yeah, bottle palms are such a scale magnet.
I used to spend hours and hours each winter with a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol.
You probably know that ants and scale insects have a symbiotic relationship.
I now stomp on every ant I see on the patio; albeit too late for the Bottle.

Convinced now that the only scale remedy is Dimethoate 480 (I think that's what it was).
Smells like poop, can only be used outdoors.

Congrats on the Bizzie; you're certainly doing a lot right, Erik, if you can keep it happy indoors during winter.

...off to wrap some old coats around my planted Washies.

Yep, know your pain. Brought back inside the house and garage all but a large potted Canary Island date palm, and potted Windmill palms. Had record lows last night.

Have other palms I've bought online on HOLD till weather is warmer so they can ship safely.

I think this weekend though we'll be in the clear.

For real. Was 86oF this afternoon, and I sweated as I hauled them back in this evening. Heading out of town, with this National Weather Service forecast:

Statement as of 4:26 PM CDT on May 01, 2013

... An unprecedented late season snowfall is forecast for
northeast Oklahoma and possibly northwest Arkansas late Thursday
into Friday...

An unseasonably strong cold front... currently located from north-
central to southwest Oklahoma will sweep southeast across the
region tonight into Thursday morning. Much colder air will filter
into the region behind the front... with temperatures falling back
into the 40s and even 30s by the end of the day Thursday in some
areas. The main upper trough will lag behind the advancing
front... which will provide lift to produce precipitation back in
the cold air behind the front. The latest data suggests that near
surface temps will get cold enough to allow for the precip to mix
with or change over to snow in northeast Oklahoma by late in the
day on Thursday and possibly even into northwest Arkansas by late
Thursday night. If this change over does indeed occur... the snow
could be heavy at times Thursday night into Friday morning with
some light accumulation of up to an inch possible mainly on grassy
or elevated surfaces north of Highway 412. Another concern is that
snow could accumulate on fully leafed trees... which... combined
with the strong north winds behind the front... could cause limbs
to break. This in turn could lead to power outages where the snow
is the heaviest. Roadways will likely remain wet due to the warm
Road temperatures... but could temporarily become slushy if the
snow falls heavy enough.

Stay tuned to the latest forecasts and statements as this
extremely rare event unfolds.

Overcast with snow, then a chance of snow after midnight. Low of 28F. Windy. Winds from the NNW at 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Chance of snow 90%.

South, barely--to 35oN (Oklahoma City, for a horse show). Horse is thoroughly blanketed tonight, even indoors.
But might only get to 34oF / +1 C down here.
