Here's to all the global warming pushers, may your winters be -30 below and four feet of snow in your driveway. Because I want you happy.

"Unique angle but very nice."
Allen, it's the only view if you're standing under a palm looking up.

Cheers, Barrie.

Trachy seeds

Post by Wes North Van »

I usually put them in a ziploc a baggie and germinate them. I have hundreds of small trachy seedlings that I plant in the yard or sell to anyone that wants one.

It is one of the trachies in the front yard. It is my largest one.
It is also the one were most of the trachy seedlings are naturilizing in the ground.
Yrachy seeds germonate very easily and they do not need heat. I may just accidently drop some seeds throughout Vancouver.

Wes-Palm-Seed (spreading palms in Vancouver like Johnny Apple Seed).

WOWOWOWOWOWOWOW...that is one gorgeous Trachy.
That top "load" looks like grapes...

I should go back in these posts...but gotta ask: how many years has it been planted outdoors?

Just think, you can remove your house number (probably can't see it anymore anyway!)
"You need to find Wes' house? Just follow this road until you see Palm Central" :D

Unbelievably beautiful! Thanks for posting it.

I think it has been outside for 14 years. It was planted as a 2 gallon $19.99 palm seedling.
They grow very quickly here in North Van. Once they reach a couple of feet of trunk they grow 2 to 3' a year.

Barrie;

It may be a common view to you, but I have never been directly below the fronds and close to the trunk of a 8' to 10' Palm.

I hope one day you get a chance to be directly under a large palm.
Mine is now almost 20' in height and it is really cool to look up at it.
I'm glad everyone likes the pic. I thought it was a cool shot.

Wes...that pic is one of the most beautiful shots I've ever seen!
20 feet, a 2 gallon plant 14 years ago. Man how these things thrive on the Coast!

You folks must've laughed your brains out seeing my 30 year old palm that is obviously (now I know!) stunted from being in a succession of pots all these years. But you were very kind to not say that.

I think your palm looks awesome.
You should be proud of it. To keep it alive for 30 years.
I hope all of mine live that long.

Wes, thanks for that. Thank goodness my palm can't talk...it'd have a mouthful for me, :x

Hey Wes, with that giant beauty, have you tried to Google Earth your address (don't tell us...maybe we'll find it by accident!) to see your palm at your house by satellite. After all, "they" say you can see an orange on a picnic table...(how's that for "big bro"?)

Once a trachy trunk is about three or four feet then it starts to produce seeds. I find the males seem to get flowers at a younger age than females but that is just my experience.

Lucky I will have to try google earth and see if I can find it.

My trachy's trunk is 28 inches (soil to first frond), so by the time this beggar is ready to blossom, I doubt it'll REMEMBER what it's supposed to do!

Wes, just look for the biggest palm in the neighbourhood (once you get close).
That'll be yours. 8)

Ginko Biloba is supposed to help with memory.

If you start adding that to the fertilizer, the trachy's memory may still be good when it finally gets to flower.

Ha ha, Allen, I'll pour a ginkgo tea for palm and me.

After a fab day yesterday where we hit 15 degrees, we're sitting at 4 now.
Feels like -4 with that northwest wind.
You folks are cold again, too. Darn.
