Here's something for people to think about.
Both of these j-trees are the same age, and both have frozen to the ground in the past. The big one has been moved to a better spot and has doubled in size in a year, and the other (small one) was also moved to a better spot last summer. We will see what it does this summer. The point is, if you can a find a spot where they like it they will show it.

And here is the bigger one the year before.

It grew THAT MUCH in one year?
So the first pic was the wrong spot...because it wasn't raised up?
Made it easy for watering though...
New spot over the septic tank by any chance?
I'll pick the best spot for my last y.rostrata ... oh, and I've got the unknown yucca to plant too.
Great comparison pics, Aaron.

Yes, the little one was originally planted on lower ground. It is now on a mound about 4' high.lucky1 wrote: So the first pic was the wrong spot...because it wasn't raised up?

The bigger one was on a slight slope so it did just a bit better. It is now planted in good gravel mix and on a mound that is over 2' high.
When I dug up the little one it had very little roots, probably rotted off every year in the lower ground. It is true about these j-trees, they need very well drained soil. Drainage is everything.
Sorry I repeat myself so much, I want to help anyone that reads this.

PS I don't think I watered the big one last year, once they start growing good I leave them alone because I don't want to rot them out. Of cource some yuccas don't mind extra water in the summer.

You certainly have the mild winters for it to succeed if you protect from rain.

I recall growing J trees from seeds back about 2000/2001 and under a plastic roof they survived the winter....the next winter they saw more winter precipitation and they rotted out.

They are a close relative of baccata(or are they Tim?), but they are not very cold hardy. I did notice in that area they are not as tall as they are north of Vegas.

I don't know much about Y. schidigeras.............I tried a seedling back in 2000 and it died in it's first winter......as far as I know they should be zone 6b hardy out west in dry areas and less hardy in higher moisture areas. Has your friend south of you tried Y. schidigera? They sure look like a trunking baccata but don't have baccata's cold tolerance. There is another form of schidigera down in the San Diego, CA area..........I would like to try one of those too. Y. schidigera is another species I need to do a mass planting!

They might grow in a southern 6b. My friend has tried many of times and I have tried many times even bigger plants with nice trunks, and covered ones. I would say they are as hardy as Y. rigida.
I think you have the right idea of a mass planting or a cross with baccata might work. You would think finding a cross in the wild would be easy because the two grow along side each other.

I know some of the weather stations within thier range had readings of -18/-20F That's cold! But does not surprise me. I seen one growing in Pocatello Idaho for years that survived winters of -20f or colder. I thought it was fake for years until it keep getting bigger. It was in a raised rail-road-tie bed about 2/3 feet high. If you can keep the roots out of the wet I think they do well.

That is why Y. brevifolia was the first yucca I ever grown from seed, that and I could not get a live plant back then.
