Plants Delight has a 'new' linearifolia

That's cool!

I haven't looked at their 2013 issue yet, but aren't Tony's "added descriptions" on some plants hilarious?
...that he's only killed it twice, etc.

Hi Barb,

yes...........PLN does 'kill me' with great commentary in their plant descriptions.

Here's the latest Y. linearifolia from PDN. Almost looks like a elata or glauca.......I gotta have it.

Yup, a couple of acres out in the country...just think of what you'd have space for

I'm not gonna move - two month ago I got extra 500 sq. meters (have no idea about sq.feet) of a garden plot. Constructor filled up a ravine along an east edge of my backyard. Now I have 1500 sq.meters of the land in total.

Hope Aaron gets that warm-up too.

Thanks Barb, but I think we won't see above freezing untill the Tuesday after, so almost ten days from now. And only a high of 33F/0.5C.

I want you to box up some of that 48f and send it with Jay, so he can drop it off here on his way to Vegas.

Actually no, nowhere near what I usually get. Then again, we didnt have a massively wet year like you did out east.

im especially excited for the arisaema. 4-6 feet tall. Hardy to zone 5, so with a good mulch and if its kept dry it will survive here!

They can be a bit tricky to get started and settled in the ground, but they need it to be dry during winter. Well ee how it goes anyways!!

For some reason my L.Ramsayi and L.Grandis have done well inside this year....
probably because the kitchen is warmer-they have both put out a leaf this winter.

I would have thought I would be lucky if they kept any of their leaves!

Yeah, Ive read most Licula will put out a leaf a year, 2 if youre lucky! I bet its still a fighter jet, compared to the turtle Jubea though lol

This "lucky" couldn't get L.grandis through its first year.

I hope mine do OK. I see 8 roots in the tub, so im hoping for that many seedlings. Im going to keep them in a baggie as long as I possibly can, since they need humidity to thrive.

Either that, or I need to learn some crazy voodoo

You guys crack me up.....they both put out 2 leaves over the summer,
one so far over the winter,the first Grandis I had did nothing....until it died.

Now I will expect more from them though-LOL

I think part of it is getting a good one and the other part
is then being past their awkward adolescence-you know-
when they die

One other thing-don't know if you guys remember me saying that I rescued
my Bizzy off the porch when I saw it was 22F out? It was nearly sunrise so it
really took the worst of it-I gave the spear a tug and it never pulled but a few
weeks ago(probably more),I noticed that the newest leaf was all dried up....

I think it would have pulled but the palm was so bone dry that instead of freezing
up -the moisture in the leaf- it freeze dried it-already has a new leaf coming up,so
looks like just one dried up soldier and back to business for the Bizzy.....

SOme plants just take a bit of tinkering in regards to your general plant care. 2 leaves arent too bad compared to what ive read. Maybe seedlings are just prone to dampening off?

The new leaves are so blue on the Bizzy that there isn't much difference between it and the other leaves.

I kept it way to dry last year but that is probably what saved it too.

When I mixed up the soil for the Bizzy I made it so it would dry out quickly,
I guess I should have planned on watering it more but I didn't-it has some growing to do now

I add some hot water now and then to give it a steam bath.

Never occurred to me to give it a steam bath...good idea obviously.
Put mine inside a dry cleaner's bag...yes, it had been "aired out", but it still croaked.

You do know how big that Caryota maxima (or a gigas) gets...even in CAPTIVITY

IMO, better than any tree fern, Jim

Oh to have those in my kitchen...might spend more time there.

Here's Caryota 'himilaya' back in 2004.........super hardy.......died after first freeze.

I did everything for that Licuala short of flushing it around in the toilet for more humidity.
Academic, since it's dead.

Tim, You could go to Jail for leaving a Fishtail out in winter.

Thanks, Barb! Since the soil dumped there should have being compressed for a while I'm planning use the land for growing greens and vegetables and adding a manure and sand twice a year for the soil re-cultivation.

As for a legal aspects of the ravines fillings the US currency is a most powerful law in this bloody corrupted country. Contractor pays to the land regulatory department from money I pay to the guy.

I think this one is going to blast off this year,it
seemed to be speeding up last year... as the weather cooled
and we headed into fall it slowed again,hopefully the Licuala
and Caryota will put on some size this year.
I would like to move them all into bigger pots this spring to
encourage them-they are forecasting another warm spring after Feb...
would be very nice after some of the cool springs we had-last year was off the charts!

March last year was 10F over the warmest we ever had!

I also saw there was a town in Minnesota that had a record high
of 57F for one particular day in March,they had a low of 61F on that day!
Just to be clear,their low temp was higher than the all-time high temp for the day!
