Light in winter

Post by TerdalFarm »

Do you supplement? I don't, I just try to place potted plants in for the winter near windows. This clump (dominated by foxtail and traveler's palms) is by a sliding glass door, albeit facing ENE so no direct sun in winter. Seem to be OK, but no growth.

my plants hibernate in the unheated garage which is typically in the mid to upper 40's unless there is a massive cold blast when it might drop close to freezing......not much light in there............plants seem OK as long as temps remain below 50F.

I have a lot of my cold hardier palms also in a unheated, but well insulated garage and have two floor lights with a CFL bulb in each that is equivalent to 200 watts of light on a 14hr timer.

I have a spare bedroom that I keep other plants/palms/seedlings in that has a room heater to keep at 72deg and ceiling light bulbs(3) are daylight spectrum type bulbs.

All other palms are as close to windows as possible(mostly east/west facing) depending on type of palm and it's light requirements.

On a heat pump, so warm air isn't dry like regular furnace. Easy to keep house humidity at around 50%.

Interesting topic, Erik.

No additional lighting, except in the basement where I start palm seedlings.
Have one of those little red/blue light thingies over seedlings that have popped.

Your housesitter did a fine job; they look good.
