This Winters Indoor Palms.......

My W. robusta will probably be in a darker area.
Would a couple 100W compact flourescents be enough to help keep it healthy till next Spring ?
Or should I plan on something brighter? I am not too worried about growth this Winter as this will probably be planted in the Spring. ( going to see if I can get the one I have planted Through a Winter before dealing with this one

Decided to plant this one in the yard. ( hopefully another month or two of warm weather )

Yours makes me want to kick myself in the a$$ for putting it where the wind could get to it. I would have a BEAUTIFUL washy like yours but every 2-3 weeks, I'de have to cut a leaf that was ripped apart off

Picked up 2 at the box stores last May when they came in, (Lowe's) Both in the ground now.
Not too sure about the age, 3 gallon when I got them. Maybe 2yr?

Anyways, I guess I am committed to getting them thru the Winter now. If all goes well some filifera will be joining them next Spring

Knnn I will be planting some of mine next spring. It would be great to see how yours come through the winter and with what protection used. Keep us informed.

more on the light topic......100 watt Fluorescents are not so good for anything but seedlings. Not to mention that most Fluorescents are in the "pink" spectrum and not in the "white" which promotes leafy growth. If your going to use anything for artificial light, invest in MH Metal Halide lighting. You can get from 70 watt to 1000 watt and they are efficient. One 400 watt Mh will provide enough light for a 6x6ft area and 1000 watt for a 9x9 area. A 70watt is good for a spot light for one plant (small plant). I have over wintered hundreds of palms using MH lights and have never lost one due to insufficient lighting.

Hey, thanks for the welcome. I have been growing palms in IOWA for about 7 years. Everything from seed. currently I have CIDP, W Robusta, Kentia, PIDP, Sabal Minor, Jelly, Queen and my favorite challenge...Chilean wine palm....and after 4 years its still small....damn slow growing plant..!
Outside of traditional palms, I have cactus (various), Pineapple (grocery store), Vanilla and Ginger. Oh and then the standard Yuccas, Bella's, Cat palms and a few others from Walmart.

I do have a diary of the plants from seedlings until now. I will have to upload some pics soon.
