BIG NEWS from the "Kansas" Household

Post by Kansas »

Just got me a BIG Trachy Fortunei!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is a Nursery (the one that I told "TropicMan" about w/ the PDP Single) that I usually like to walk thru the Greenhouse on COLD days so I can get my tropical feel for the day. They really do not carry much in Palms and nothing in Cycads, but I still like to walk thru. Last time I was in there I asked about "Fortunei" and she didn't know what it was. So today, I had a little down time and thought I would cruise in and get my Tropical feel for the day.
I walked thru and about 3 isles in, I saw a Fortunei!!! I couldn't believe it. It was an average looking tree with about a foot of trunk. As I was looking at it, I looked out the corner of my eye and I saw a MUCH MUCH FULLER & THICKER Fortunei. This one had about 4 more inches of trunk in length and about 6-7 more fronds.
It is VERY VERY full of fronds with probably some where near 20. And there was only one dead frond at the very bottom (oldest frond). The rest are green and stand upright strong.
Since "TropicMan" found me one for $50 w/ a foot of trunk (but have not had time to go to Wichita to buy it), I was scared at what she would say the price would be. I was thinking maybe $50 if I was lucky, but more than likely around $60 - $65.
She told me it was $39.99 but she could let me have it for $29.99!!!!!!!! SOLD!!!!!! $32 w/ tax.
I now have what I have been wanting every since I got into this hobby. A Trachy Fortunei w/ at least a foot of trunk.

Good deal Wes. I have found in my zone trachy's are really not slow growers as many claim. I planted three two years ago that were small 5 gal plants with about 8 inches of trunk. The smallest one now has about three foot of trunk & they are all growing like crazy.

There is a little bit of roots coming out one of the holes. Should I repot it and pot plant, or should I leave it alone and pot plant it with a bunch of small rock on the bottom of the hole this Spring? I am NOT a big fan of repotting if a tree is doing well.

wes - I'd leave it as is until warmer weather. I was in a large local greenhouse 2 weeks ago and asked if I could special order a larger Fortunei and/or Needle Palm. Well, the manager called me back a few days later and told me they could get a large Fortunei (7 gallons) for $159. I passed for obvious reasons. I am thinking a 7 gallon T Fortunei may have a foot of trunk. I'm a decent guy I can't believe they would take advantage of me like that.

Congrats on your new addition.

Tropic, I don't have a digital camara. KNNN has been screaming at me for a year now  I know I need to get one. I might have my Mom take one and then I can e-mail it to KNNN and see if he can post it.

OP, If you want buddy, They had the other one left, I can beg them to set it back and explain to them that you want one and see if they will save it for you. OP is just an hour away and I can give directions. The remaining one is a nice one. It just was younger than the one I got. It just didn't have the trunk girth or the # of fronds. But it is a VERY nice Fortunei and DAMN well worth $30 - $40!!!!

kansas, congratulations. You'll love it. But it's still cold in Kansas, so look around the house for a Poncho (as Barrie called mine).

Just don't use the one that's on the sofa...

ha ha...it's even better than that...it's an Afghan. Or perhaps it's no longer PC to say that...how about a Middle Eastern (kinda like a Souwester)! Shouldn't have had that second beer! Zappa da Crappa...
