The gorgeous Yuccas downtown

Post by lucky1 » Wed Jun 13, 2012 12:40 pm

Had a chance to take some pics this morning.
Totally unprotected during winter.
Likely a big benefit from the adjacent apartment building and pavement.

I should try heading back there.
But I'm not often in town.

Any idea when I might find some mature seeds? a week from now? a month?

Since it's next to a fire hydrant, probably lots of dog pee if I wait until they fall on the ground.

I hope she can get seed from them?(no moths?) Those have the red people love, you should see seed pods in a month if a moth finds them.

oh yea, forgot about the elusive moth!

Location is right across from the RCMP station...do I dare try some pollinating with a brush?
Might get arrested for lascivious behaviour (or whatever it's called). :bs:

So, without "the moth", there'd be no viable seeds???? :x

Very nice Barb. I kinda remember those yuccas after being
let out of the cop shop early morning. :D

Good one Jay

So...the mystery remains whether they can have viable seeds without the yucca moth.
Maybe a very tall dog's spray might do it?

too bad Yuccas need a moth..........................I found these markers on my Yucca flowers this afternoon........somebody was in my yard hybridizing my Yuccas with Paul's rostrata pollen and Aaron's baccata pollen! Oh yea.....it was me. ( see the black and white markers??).

<img src=http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/ ... a48fd9.jpg>

PS you need some moths...........GOT PLENTY!! SEE them in the photo below???

<img src=http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/ ... bed227.jpg>

Too bad we got those horrible beetles too.....see the 'hole' in the unopened flower??

Cool, Tim, that you're working on crossing them.
It'll be super to see how the hybrids perform.
Hope they get the best traits of each.

Heck, if you've got yucca moths in MA, maybe they're around here somewhere too. :)

I forgot what kind of beetles are wrecking your flowers.

I take considerable pleasure in squishing the box elder beetles that are crawling all over my Trachy flowers.
And the y. rostrata too.
(squish, squish, squish   )

Hi Barb

The beetles are about 1/4" long half brown and half black. Here's a photo from last year.

PS, let us know if those Yuccas form seed......we'll know if the Yucca moth is in your area.

and you can't spray anything to prevent the beetles without harming the moths.
Darn.
Thanks for the new pic, don't think I've seen those here (except maybe in the pantry    )

Hi Barb

I do spray every now and then and it works for a few hours but I'm killing the moths too which I don't like to do. There are just too many beetles!

Maybe freeze dry 'em...

Those yuccas downtown are finished blooming (didn't have my camera...)

My yuccas are just starting (finally).
Had a quick look....good news no beetles; bad news no moths.

Canadian moths are busy trying to collect pollen/nectar from lightbulbs.
Idiots.

The ones in town bloom so early (nearly a month) before mine.

So pollen would need to be stored until mine are ready to receive?

Will give it a try, Aaron.
Thanks.

Barb

EDIT: Y.filamentosa just starting to bloom. No beetles, no moths, no ants.

Nice Yuccas Barb

I guess all the snow is finally gone? LOL

My last blooming Yuccas are nearly finished now. You'll need to try some Y. Glauca and Y. Gloriosa since they bloom early.

Yes it finally warmed up, and my tongue's hanging down to my knees from the sudden heatwave ... we didn't have a spring.

I've got a spot picked out for my two Big Mama seedlings...that's it, no more space (unless it's 15 acres away) :|

Yucca king Tim is probably correct. :D

Sure looks like the second picture here: http://www.swcoloradowildflowers.com/wh ... maniae.htm

Except that the yucca in the photos I took in town have very few filaments.
