Little collection of flowering Pachys

Sequoia has a fine shape...some of the branches have grown a foot already.

Little Mickey has only been in the ground a few days but already working on a second leaf.

First Hesperaloe flower opened this morning.

Your plants look great. Hesperaloe has not bloomed for me in 5 years? But keeps on living here.

Nice, Jim.

That black mulch will heat up faster too...not that you need any help with heat this spring.

Pachypodiums are lovely in flower.
The pink one is Adenium obesum I think.

Yep,cultivar- dark soldier.

I like the mulch on that side since it only gets sun
(Castor beans etc) until 1:30-2pm,so it gets nice
and hot and then they get shade

Hey Jim

The Hesperaloe typically survives most winters but is beat up. I think they want more heat than our area can give? They are planted against a south facing fence and get lots of sun when shining. I even have two types from different locales. They are not on my top 10 list for plants....... any tips? Do they need a high pH soil? We are acidic.

Only the 2 year old + shoots bloom for me so,usually one side is blooming.

I was wondering if maybe the cores of the older ones are dying back in winter....

thats the only thing I can think of.

You may be correct Jim regarding Hesperaloe. They just don't like our climate too much. Here's a couple shots from today of the two different plants I have. Keep in mind they were planted in 2004. Like the moss covered sand? LOL

They don't like my winters either. I don't think they are as cold hardy as most think. I have had many die over the years, and so I covered mine for the winter.

I bet if we collect Hesperaloe seed over its entire range we could get some to survive/bloom in our marginal climates. Who's going out to collect the seed?
