Yard Project 2012
Big things this year. Ive already planted 2 fruit trees (john pear, and toka plum), and I am awaiting the arrival of an order of evans cherry trees. I am trading one of them with my neighbor, for one of his european self fertile plums (he has never had a pollinator). That is on top of my Honeygold and seedling apples, and seedlng pear tree. Im effectively turning my yard into a mini orchard, which uses plants and plant assemblies called "guilds" and "communities", that end up creating a nearly 100% self sufficiant garden (minus maintainence like pruning, for the trees, and slashing the ground covers etc).
Oh top of the trees, I have fruiting shrubs (numerous barries) and fruiting vines (passiflora, grapes and hardy kiwi).
This will be complimented by my obsession with bamboo, and other "non hardy" plants. I am planning around the fact that I will be eventually planting, and protecting a palm. Here are some pics taken today:

Great pics! It will be interesting to see how the P. incarnata and the kiwis do for you. I've got one yard project in mind for this season, but am not sure if I'll have enough time to work on it!

Nice to get stuff outside, Jesse.

Thanks Cameron. Im Pretty sure one of the kiwis will make it. There is a house 2 blocks away thats had one for a few years, i just never managed to grab fruit for the seed. Theyre the kiwi and Passiflora are well drained.
Barb - It jsut came outta nowhere, and is supposedly sticking around for the forseeable future. I usually start the plants on the north side of the house. There is a 60x 7 walk way thats shaded 95% of the day. Its filled with wood from the old deck we tore apart

Tim, thats because weve been under cloud cover for the last 2 weeks, with cool temps, and moist air/rainy. Great for the long run, as its been a bit dry, but it sucked for plant growth. Everything has exploded over the last 2 days, since weve had full sun, 20C+ daytime temps and 5C and above night temps.

What a difference a few days make. A few record breaking warm days and you get this:
Second year for my apple, just over 5 feet, has about 4 clusters of blooms. Might let one or 2 stay on.

This is my Fargesia Rufas shoots, over 3 days. The first picture, in each day, is one culm, and the second, another:
May 13

Just planted that yesterday, along with tomatos, peppers, kiwi vines, grape... buch of other things. Got some berry shrubs (josta, boysen and goose). IT should just start to take off in a few days when it gets used to its new home.

Dude, they had a whole small wall in the greenhouse for "patio plants" to be taken indoors during the winter. Lemons, lime, tangerines, figs, hibuscus, various jasmine, oleander and a few other things. If i wasnt broke I woulda got a citrus for sure!
